New IITs vs Old NITs or Universities
My ranking of engineering colleges across India is really a big hit. Google indexed it among top pages and readers and other bloggers gave it a best possible list status. Thanks to everyone who visited and commented it.
In this post, I sincerely try to answer all those reader and clear the doubts of many other students, who always have these questions in mind but could not find a right place to ask. Hope you find it useful. Drop you comments if you have any doubts, suggestion or question about this subject.
Why to add new IITs in ranking?
The answer to this question is very simple. Because they are taking admission from this year and being a student who is willing to opt for an engineering course, one seeks their ranking and position to make a right decision. Therefore, if I want to help these students who are taking admission this year I should consider new IITs for ranking too.
Why they are ranked so high, even higher than BITS Pilani, Anna Univ and Jadavpur?
If you look into my criteria for ranking many things will be cleared. My criteria was
Here I present a list for top ranked Engineering schools in India based on Student quality and preference, Faculty, Infrastructure and Industry interface or placements.
Every criterion was given preference based on their position in the statement. The first preference is given to Student Quality, next is faculty and then Infrastructure and so on.
I strongly believe, if quality of students is great there will be an excellent placement for campus and a great industry interface too. As industry always look for good quality of students wherever they find then they approach there. This made me to give highest preference to Student Quality. Moreover, placement for this batch is after 4 years and by that these new IITs will have a far better infrastructure than even old IITs. Because of heavy budget of Rs 2800 Crore by Central Government for these new IITs.
According to Student Quality, new IITs will definitely have superiority over all NITs and Universities, at least for Top branches of engineering.
In terms of faculty, IITs do not recruit faculty with less qualification than PhD and they are always open to find best people for them. They need not to advertise for the posts and wait for people to apply like Universities. All NITs and Universities, both government and private, have many faculty members who do not hold a doctorate degree.
A handsome budget of 2113 crore will make a huge infrastructure within four years. This is highest budget allocated to some educational institutes in India before. I strongly believe new IITs will have better infrastructure than old ones too.
Finally, placements, as student quality will be great and the brand IIT will play its magic. There is no doubt about it.
Because of All the factors I was bound to give them high ranking. Given a chance to me I personally prefer new IITs too.
Hope this gives all the answers. If still you have any doubts please don’t hesitate to drop a comment.

well mate i m a fourth yr stud in jadavpur university…well all i would say is placement wise bits/ nits/ju all r very good but iits have the best in terms of everything.even though the new iits are starting to have full infra, like iit patna, they may have some problems no doubt as nothing is perfect initially iit will take some time but “the iit tag” will make a difference as the best go to iits.believe me on this and dont go to placements n all they are always misleading.the only manta is “there is nothing like iits” in engg scenario.only if u dont get ur preference stream in new iits then opt for nots/bits/ju/dce else only iits.u take student quality/infra/faculty/nyhting iits are no match.take my word i am a 4th year in jadavpur university i know the difference very well.
I find such discussions very obvious by aspirants or fresh graduates. Being a BITSian and close associate of IITians, Purdue, MIT and Stanford’s graduate, I would like to put my comments without trying to offend anyone’s personal perspective.
First a few facts:
Very few might be aware that Govt. has tried bringing BITS, Pilani under IIT banner way back in 70s. BITS opted to remain autonomous for reasons. Further, BITS neither get govt. funding (except a few projects) nor tried to attract such funds. BITS keeps the decision, pertaining to the quality and methodology, within the campus. No external intervention, though transparent. This takes courage, vision and confidence about the pedagogy. And it gives BITS strength too.
BITS, Pilani has brought up remarkable innovations in the Indian academics viz. Practice school concept (Industry – Institute collaboration), Vertical exchange education system, Innovative teaching methods viz. web based classroom….. to name a few, list is quite long.
BITS and MIT’s association revamped the education system for sure. And the Alma-mater is continuing to do so. This innovative approach is what required in professional education.
You may say, these are there in other institution too. Right you are. But other institute adopted it later.
I do agree with Zahid, that the quality of student help making the institute’s reputation. In the same note I would like to convey that it is apparent that BITSians are in esteemed position both in academics and in corporate (can be searched in web too). So the quality of input by BITS can’t be questioned.
In BITS, students are made self motivator, some find it dissatisfying as they join with a mind set that the institute will spoon feed each concept and might start looking out with a hope for the same by some other institute, which he won’t find anywhere.
BITS provide everything required grooming one’s career but the height of success depends on individual’s dedication and determination.
In my comment I didn’t try to compare BITS with other institute, because I personally believe that it is an individual strength which actually matters, otherwise the entire listed institute by Zahid has the required infrastructure to give a kick start to any aspirant’s career.
I can assure that BITS has enough experience and capabilities to lead the education system for many more years to come along with other Tier-I Institute.
“Please don’t look things like me=BITS=best or me=IIT=best or so on”. Acquire knowledge because knowledge only helps getting us a place in the crowd.
sir, is it better to apply for new iits for mtech…. my gate score is 477, AIR is 2823 nd percentile 95.26
for gate ME paper
Abhi, you didn’t say what other choices you have. Nevertheless, IIT brand name sells – many times unfairly – but definitely sells.
THIS IS THE ASNWER TO YOU ALL MY MATES HERE YOU HAVE PLACED NEW IITS ABOVE OLDER NITS LET ALONE NEW IITS THERE IS NOT A SINGLE IITIAN WHO HAVE WON NOBEL PRIZE FOR INDIA INFACT LET ALONE NOBEL PRIZE NO IITIAN TILL DATE HAS WON BHARAT RATAN INFACT LET ALONE BHARAT RATNA LEAVING MR MOORTHY THE FOUNDER OF INFOSYS WHO HAS DONE MTECH FROM IIT NO IITIAN TILL DATE HAS WON PADMA VIBHUSAN AND YOU ARE CALLING THAT THEIR GRADUATES ARE SUPERB . TO ALL THE STUDENTS I WANT TO SAY THAT THOUGH IIT BRAND WILL GET YOU INITIAL EDGE OVER OTHER STUDENTS BUT REMEBER HARD WORK HAS NO SUBSTITUTE AND I HAVE SEEN IIT STUDENTS WHO BECUASE OF THEIR OVER PROUDNESS ARE OVERTAKEN BY NITIANS ITS A FACT THAT NITIANS ARE NOT BRIGHTER THAN IITIANS OR BITSIANS ARE NOT BRIGHTER THAN IITIANS BUT NITIAN AND BITSIAN ARE MUCH MORE HARDWORKING THAN THEM.
I WANT TO TELL ONE MORE THING THE GREAT ALBERT EINSTEIN HE CAN BE CONSIDERED AS THE ONE OF THE MOST BRIGHTEST BRAIN EVER BUT IF HE WOULD HAVE JUST SIT IN THAT THOUGHT EVEN HE CANT DO ANYTHING.
THE GREATEST INVENTOR TILL DATE EDISON EVEN DONT GO TO HIGHER SECONDARY SCHOOL. SO MATE ON WHICH BASIS YOU ARE SAYING THAT NEW IITS ARE BETTER THAN NITS
my gate score-440 ec,gen.
i wanna know abt good college with good placement where can i get admission/
nitesh..
like the author already said he is basing the rankings on “Here I present a list for top ranked Engineering schools in India based on Student quality and preference, Faculty, Infrastructure and Industry interface or placements”
the last question u asked is answered.
iits are a brand people would die for, they are india’s elite institutions,i need no facts to support it because the world knows it.
well, you said that iitians are proud haughty etc etc, you mean to say nitians are so down-to-earth personality rite???!!nice joke!!
u say iitians are lesser hard working than nitians, well u must have never heard about the preperation needed to crack the jee,and let me tell you most people who qualify jee qualify aieee also,i dont think the opposite statistics is worth mentioning
iitians may not have bagged the nobel prize, neither have the nitians, but who are behind the success of isro, drdo, ins arihant those are the best brains workin for india, most of the engineers are iitians
so just spew out your iit hatred and accept the fact that iit>>>>nits, bits etc…..
lastly, about the initial edge you take two people one iitian, one nitian same talent same dedication, still the iitian would be favoured…
Nitesh and all: I totally agree with Nitin, I could not answer because I was too busy GATE results analysis for M.Tech admissions. And also felt not important to answer it, as almost everyone know the facts.
only think i would like to ask you all who think IITs are comparable to any other institute in India to read a book bySandipan Deb “The IITians: The Story of a Remarkable Indian Institution and How its Alumni Are Reshaping the World”.
I says all about IITian behind the curtain of Indian state development in home and abroad. IITians contribution to Indian economy and in developing the brand India in technology.
Truth be to told, IITs are Temple, Masjid, Church and Gurdwara of people try to excel wherever they go.
sir im of sc caste . .shud i need to submit this year caste certificate or i can apply old one . .
well it may be just speculations and not reality about the status and i doubt if first batch of new iit will get placement better than bits/dce. Noway, if u think about student quality , let me clear 30% of dce mech and 20% of whole dce are iit qualified. and some left the iit at even 2385 rank or so….. and apart from infra (i guess they may take years, not at all u will get that in 4 years) , there is alumni thing also which is helpful in all way….i myself left new iit’s even coe iit raj for dce eee…and there are many people to do this. plus there was already an article regarding how many left iit (nearly 600 left for other institute) even 200 left iit roorkee. so i m not pleased with the explanation and think these rank will misguide the freshers…..
Vivi: Its simple Vivi if you left new IITs for some college doest mean that everyone have to do same or thing in same direction. Please read all comment we have people left BITS CS to join new IITs. The people who left IIT Roorkee and others are obsessed with the place like Delhi or so. Please keep in mind IITs are not some college that need time to establish and IITs have a greater alumni network than any other college India. When someone come and ask an IITian, they answer I m from IIT. Then deeper IIT some place. It indicates that, this is a common class of people who share a great attitude.
I wish you a great luck with your decision.
Dear Zahid sir,
What is the best option?
The interdisciplinary courses in IITs or main streem course in NITs ?
I want to go abroad for Phd.
my Gate score-482(ME) and Category- OBC NC
Sir you hvn’t discussed this topic. Plz elaborate it. I am a regular follower of your comments
Please Reply.
plz help me to take my career’s most critical decision.
Sujal: Thanks for a nice question. I will write a complete post about on this weekend. Hope this will help many students across the nation. Thanks again for wonderful question.
sir i had read the whole blog and completely agree with you . Because i know what you have to sacrifice for a iit rank .sir i just passed 12th and expecting a rank between 3000-5000 rank in jee. Can you please guide me with the admission procedure and counselling .I desperetely want the answer soon……… Also tell me about construction of new iits and which new iit will have its campus soon.
1)sir i also want to recommend my fellow students that listen to iitians only they can only guide you through the proper ranking
2)Also about bitsat that i have just given bitsat and my score was 372…… BUT I WILL NEVER GO TO BITS PILANI AT THE EXPENSE OF IITs
Because iits are the best it is always commited to nation’s progress.
3)About bits pilani that ‘It is wrong that students of bits pilani are good or they are smart’ because as you can see the format of bit sat exam it allows only those student to take the exam who have secured more than 80% in their PCM BOARD EXAM. So many talented students do not get admission to bits pilani even they are smater than the rest but only because of board exam they could not make it ,this also reduces compition in bit sat exam. That why i say that student quality of bits pilani is doubted….
I have been very fortunate in knowing quiet a large number of IIT students and NIT students. There is no question that both these category are brilliant as they enter college as freshers. The NITians have a bit more relaxed approach towards life and the environment in the NITs suits them and finally end up completing their graduation not being very technical. On the contrary the IITians have a tendency to turn geeky and although they turn out strong in their technical abilities, their social skills are quiet affected (atleast the hard core techies) . Further both types are equally brilliant, but IITians are hard working and NITians Lazy. They finally end up with completely different skill sets in the end. Put the NITians on the business side and IITians on the technology side – I guess the company will do well.
sir,
Talking about new IITs….even IIT Guwahati is a comparatively new IIT and by far the fastest developing IIT….so you said that the new IITs will become better than the old ones…does that include Guwahati also???…i have heard from many people that IIT-G has awesome physics and mechanical faculty…is it true???
gr8………
i was expecting same response for newer iits……..
actually i am in one, doing my 2nd year in computer science and engg.
and let me tell u in spite of all problems that we have wid new iits its always better to be in a new iit than old universities and nits.
I am not telling an absurd thing,i have my grounds to stay wid..
1)faculty is highly qualified as they have to fulfill more than a dozen of norms and qualifications to be over there.and actually that’s reason
for having limited faculty.
2)Course design is the most terrific thing as most of them have adapted it from their mentor iits or have taken it wid slight modification.
They make you get maximum utilization of intellectual power in best books & brains.
3)Laboratories are most important for a technical institutes and most of us think that it is the thing that a new iits lags behind in.Its quite true
that the labs can’t be compared wid the old iits, but the point u should notice is that the no of students in new iits is also as small as 40 student
per branch per year which don’t need that large lab.The authorities are trying their best to establish labs. and they are quite successful wid that too.
4)student quality of course which is ensured as the common entrance for all through iit jee.and yes i heard that a large no students refused admissions at
new iits that’s just because of there is always a chance of betterment and they would have thought to take second chance but what i know is that as large
as 90% of them have taken admissions.
and at last its an open platform and i am just giving my point of view and this does not mean that i am against all nits and older universities over new iits.
at the end of day choice is going to be yours and its not the case that i am in one such institute so i am favoring it.i have talked to many of my friends
over different institutes in India and then i get to know of these differences.
sir i got 1345 rank in sc . there are total 1426 seats while 1773 students are selected by jee. what branch i can get in new iits also suggest more promising new iit

Answer : I recommend that you should talk to people from other colleges also. Asking ONLY IITians if their college is the best option for you (given your ranks , preferences) is pointless.

Answer : And BITS Pilani isn’t ? What do you know about BITS , that makes u assume such things?
Guess who made Hotmail ? Or who started companies like Onida , I-Flex, Microtek? Or where our Minister for Sci and Tech did his BE ? Or who are/have been the CEOs of companies like Wipro,Dabur,Ford Motors India, Cholamandalam,SAIL,AMKETTE,Eicher Motors, helpage India? Or who invented the PARAM Supercomputer and the Simputer ?
All answers found here : http://www.bitsaa.org/?page=whoswho
Would you be rather stuck in a college with no facilities and studying a course which you have no interest for a tag, rather than seeing whats best for you and your career?

Answer: Did you know that many of the IIMs don’t even consider if you have less than 85% marks in your Board exams irrespective of your CAT score?? What about them?? IIM-B gives more weigtage to 10th and 12th Board marks than it gives to CAT score.
If they are so smart , how come they can clear all other competitive exams , yet fail to get 80% + ? Maybe its becuz BITS doesnt want unidirectional coached students who have no soft skills ?
My advice to you : I understand that you have sacrificed a lot for IIT JEE.But thats the past now.Dont let it affect your judgement.Find out info on all colleges that you can get into.Given your expected rank in IITJEE , you do NOT stand a chance of getting a good course. So please choose wisely. Remember that your entire career depends on the choices you make now.Best of Luck
@Ani :
1) Yes but given your limited faculty strength , it limits the no. of interdisciplinary courses. Also faculty have their specializations; so you may not find a good faculty member to do projects in the area you want.
2) Yes that is expected. However its the implementation that counts.
3) Research labs will take time. Common academic labs are found in all AICTE colleges in India.
4) Yes student input is excellent.
I wish you and your IIT the best of luck.
Sir
First of all I would like to thank you for this wonderful blog…
I got rank 3351 in jee and I’m very confused..
Whether I should take Msc at some old IIT
or Metallurgy at IIT Roorkee
or something at the new IITs???
Also please post the scope of the Msc branches at IITs..
And what should be my decision if I plan to do MBA later?
Please reply Sir.. I’ll be waiting
Sir,
My IITJEE’10 rank(gen) is 3488 and WBJEE’10 rank(gen) is 70. Should I opt for Electronics in Jadavpur(Kolkata) or new IITs?
iit’s are the institutes of national importance thus should occupy top place in the ranking.and bits or nits come next.
Sir,
Which is better between ‘Electronics’ in IT-BHU and (Ocean & Naval arch./Mining/Metallurgy/Chemical Engg.) in the old IITs. DOES THE TAG “IT” OF BHU HAVE ANY DISADVANTAGE COMPARED TO THE “IIT” TAG?????
Sir, i have 31000 rank in aieee can i get govt.college
