New IITs vs Old NITs or Universities

2009 July 7

My ranking of engineering colleges across India is really a big hit. Google indexed it among top pages and readers and other bloggers gave it a best possible list status. Thanks to everyone who visited and commented it. Apart from appreciation, I also received harsh responses from readers, specially for ranking new IITs so high in ranking, above old NITs and Universities. Few readers questioned for not adding few private universities, which were ranked as top engineering schools by some news agencies.

In this post, I sincerely try to answer all those reader and clear the doubts of many other students, who always have these questions in mind but could not find a right place to ask. Hope you find it useful. Drop you comments if you have any doubts, suggestion or question about this subject.

Why to add new IITs in ranking?
The answer to this question is very simple. Because they are taking admission from this year and being a student who is willing to opt for an engineering course, one seeks their ranking and position to make a right decision. Therefore, if I want to help these students who are taking admission this year I should consider new IITs for ranking too.

Why they are ranked so high, even higher than BITS Pilani, Anna Univ and Jadavpur?
If you look into my criteria for ranking many things will be cleared. My criteria was

Here I present a list for top ranked Engineering schools in India based on Student quality and preference, Faculty, Infrastructure and Industry interface or placements.

Every criterion was given preference based on their position in the statement. The first preference is given to Student Quality, next is faculty and then Infrastructure and so on.

I strongly believe, if quality of students is great there will be an excellent placement for campus and a great industry interface too. As industry always look for good quality of students wherever they find then they approach there. This made me to give highest preference to Student Quality. Moreover, placement for this batch is after 4 years and by that these new IITs will have a far better infrastructure than even old IITs. Because of heavy budget of Rs 2800 Crore by Central Government for these new IITs.

According to Student Quality, new IITs will definitely have superiority over all NITs and Universities, at least for Top branches of engineering.

In terms of faculty, IITs do not recruit faculty with less qualification than PhD and they are always open to find best people for them. They need not to advertise for the posts and wait for people to apply like Universities. All NITs and Universities, both government and private, have many faculty members who do not hold a doctorate degree.

A handsome budget of 2113 crore will make a huge infrastructure within four years. This is highest budget allocated to some educational institutes in India before. I strongly believe new IITs will have better infrastructure than old ones too.

Finally, placements, as student quality will be great and the brand IIT will play its magic. There is no doubt about it.

Because of All the factors I was bound to give them high ranking. Given a chance to me I personally prefer new IITs too.

Hope this gives all the answers. If still you have any doubts please don’t hesitate to drop a comment.

    Dear sir,
I shall be grateful if u can kindly clarify my important query for admission in IIIT- kanchipuram or NIT – Trichy.
I am AIR- 16033, state rank (Tamilnadu)-327 in AIEEE 2011. I hail from chennai city. My parents prefer my studying in chennai at IIIT in CSE, ME or ECE as a day scholar as compared to my staying at Hostel at Trichy. Whereas I understand from past data that my rank would make me eligible for a good course (ECE, CS..) in NIT-Trichy. It is a well known fact that NIT Trichy has established reputation over the decades. For my future prospects, which is a better choice?

    sir,
sorry, but i could not appreciate with your reasons for placing new IITs above the already renowned universities…
as a student of jadavpur university i guess i have some idea about what it takes to be there in a top university.and i cant agree with you about just the good students and huge amount of funding will overnight make top class institute..in reality i think you should really get well informed about the placements and not the percentage but the quality of placements of those ranked universities…though every year several students from our IT ,CSE ,ECE departments in JU get placed in Google, Microsoft ,Yahoo, Adobe,Amazon,TI, and many top level multinational technology companies you ranked jadavpur as bad as 20….i am surely not sure about those 1 to 19 …..

    Sir,
I have got a rank of 11671 in aieee and i can get to NIT Bhopal (almost any branch)thru home state quota and only civil engineering from better NITs. From my WBJEE rank also i can get into Jadavpur University but only in civil, chemical, metallurgy!!
Should i choose CSE from NIT Bhopal or should i choose civil from jadavpur or better NITs?? Which career should i choose? Or should a better college prevail while malking any decision?

i will say that sir..old NITs are of course higher in ranking than new IITs.coz to grow in to a full fledged college..every institute take a time whether its IIT or NIT or any other college..

    Sir,

I have been alloted Architecture in IIT KGP in the first round of counselling. My IITJEE AIR 7426. My AIEEE rank is 3704. There is a option for architecture getting upgraded to other streams like polymer or paper and pulp in ROORKEE or may be other streams in IT-BHU or ISM-DHANBAD in further rounds, but for that i’ll have to pay the registration fee of Rs. 40,000/- which is non-refundable.

What do you suggest. Should I take a chance in IIT or should I go for the NIT’s? Waiting for your earliest reply.

I definetely agree with you sir for it is the students who make a college and not a lavish campus .Being a student of IIT Mandi (H.P.), I take pride in reminding all that all the students who enter an IIT (old IIT/new IIT/1st attempt/2nd attempt) have cleared one Exam – The IIT-JEE Exam : which is a dream for many and it remains a dream for many the rest of their lives.

prateek, you should definitely go for cs in nit bhopal. if you are really inteested in civil then you may prefer the better nits.i would not advise you take civil or chemical at jadavpur because i am not at all impressed with the placements there.
