B.Tech Admission Advises, M.Tech Admission Advises

New IITs vs Old NITs or Universities

My ranking of engineering colleges across India is really a big hit. Google indexed it among top pages and readers and other bloggers gave it a best possible list status. Thanks to everyone who visited and commented it. Apart from appreciation, I also received harsh responses from readers, specially for ranking new IITs so high in ranking, above old NITs and Universities. Few readers questioned for not adding few private universities, which were ranked as top engineering schools by some news agencies.

In this post, I sincerely try to answer all those reader and clear the doubts of many other students, who always have these questions in mind but could not find a right place to ask. Hope you find it useful. Drop you comments if you have any doubts, suggestion or question about this subject.

Why to add new IITs in ranking?
The answer to this question is very simple. Because they are taking admission from this year and being a student who is willing to opt for an engineering course, one seeks their ranking and position to make a right decision. Therefore, if I want to help these students who are taking admission this year I should consider new IITs for ranking too.

Why they are ranked so high, even higher than BITS Pilani, Anna Univ and Jadavpur?
If you look into my criteria for ranking many things will be cleared. My criteria was

Here I present a list for top ranked Engineering schools in India based on Student quality and preference, Faculty, Infrastructure and Industry interface or placements.

Every criterion was given preference based on their position in the statement. The first preference is given to Student Quality, next is faculty and then Infrastructure and so on.

I strongly believe, if quality of students is great there will be an excellent placement for campus and a great industry interface too. As industry always look for good quality of students wherever they find then they approach there. This made me to give highest preference to Student Quality. Moreover, placement for this batch is after 4 years and by that these new IITs will have a far better infrastructure than even old IITs. Because of heavy budget of Rs 2800 Crore by Central Government for these new IITs.

According to Student Quality, new IITs will definitely have superiority over all NITs and Universities, at least for Top branches of engineering.

In terms of faculty, IITs do not recruit faculty with less qualification than PhD and they are always open to find best people for them. They need not to advertise for the posts and wait for people to apply like Universities. All NITs and Universities, both government and private, have many faculty members who do not hold a doctorate degree.

A handsome budget of 2113 crore will make a huge infrastructure within four years. This is highest budget allocated to some educational institutes in India before. I strongly believe new IITs will have better infrastructure than old ones too.

Finally, placements, as student quality will be great and the brand IIT will play its magic. There is no doubt about it.

Because of All the factors I was bound to give them high ranking. Given a chance to me I personally prefer new IITs too.

Hope this gives all the answers. If still you have any doubts please don’t hesitate to drop a comment.

i have not allot any seat in nits.but someone tell me that if seats will remain left in nits then u take admission on basic of ur rank by consult to the principal of that nit.
    It is possible.
    Please guide me.

  3. Bitsian

No offence but most companies(the good ones) know the difference in student quality at the new and old iits so you will need to consider a lot of things if you want to go to a new IIT.

  4. Bitsian

Seriously i oppose that new IITs(Even ISM) are anywhere even close to BITS Pilani.Bits is a reputed institute which has been for over 55 years and is comparable to the old IITs.If you just want IIT-Brand when you are getting a branch(a good one) at both BITS PILANI and a New IIT,Its pure stupidity to choose the new IIT. Bits has world class infrastructure, great faculty,a lot of exposure,a lot of facilities and clubs which i can say hands down are way ahead of the new IITs.

  20. gourav pathak

prateek, you should definitely go for cs in nit bhopal. if you are really inteested in civil then you may prefer the better nits.i would not advise you take civil or chemical at jadavpur because i am not at all impressed with the placements there.

  21. Mohit Malhotra

I definetely agree with you sir for it is the students who make a college and not a lavish campus .Being a student of IIT Mandi (H.P.), I take pride in reminding all that all the students who enter an IIT (old IIT/new IIT/1st attempt/2nd attempt) have cleared one Exam – The IIT-JEE Exam : which is a dream for many and it remains a dream for many the rest of their lives.

  25. HARSH JHAWAR

    Sir,

I have been alloted Architecture in IIT KGP in the first round of counselling. My IITJEE AIR 7426. My AIEEE rank is 3704. There is a option for architecture getting upgraded to other streams like polymer or paper and pulp in ROORKEE or may be other streams in IT-BHU or ISM-DHANBAD in further rounds, but for that i’ll have to pay the registration fee of Rs. 40,000/- which is non-refundable.

What do you suggest. Should I take a chance in IIT or should I go for the NIT’s? Waiting for your earliest reply.

  27. rajdeep ghosh

i will say that sir..old NITs are of course higher in ranking than new IITs.coz to grow in to a full fledged college..every institute take a time whether its IIT or NIT or any other college..

  28. Prateek

    Sir,
I have got a rank of 11671 in aieee and i can get to NIT Bhopal (almost any branch)thru home state quota and only civil engineering from better NITs. From my WBJEE rank also i can get into Jadavpur University but only in civil, chemical, metallurgy!!
Should i choose CSE from NIT Bhopal or should i choose civil from jadavpur or better NITs?? Which career should i choose? Or should a better college prevail while malking any decision?

  30. Saurav Das

    sir,
sorry, but i could not appreciate with your reasons for placing new IITs above the already renowned universities…
as a student of jadavpur university i guess i have some idea about what it takes to be there in a top university.and i cant agree with you about just the good students and huge amount of funding will overnight make top class institute..in reality i think you should really get well informed about the placements and not the percentage but the quality of placements of those ranked universities…though every year several students from our IT ,CSE ,ECE departments in JU get placed in Google, Microsoft ,Yahoo, Adobe,Amazon,TI, and many top level multinational technology companies you ranked jadavpur as bad as 20….i am surely not sure about those 1 to 19 …..

    Dear sir,
I shall be grateful if u can kindly clarify my important query for admission in IIIT- kanchipuram or NIT – Trichy.
I am AIR- 16033, state rank (Tamilnadu)-327 in AIEEE 2011. I hail from chennai city. My parents prefer my studying in chennai at IIIT in CSE, ME or ECE as a day scholar as compared to my staying at Hostel at Trichy. Whereas I understand from past data that my rank would make me eligible for a good course (ECE, CS..) in NIT-Trichy. It is a well known fact that NIT Trichy has established reputation over the decades. For my future prospects, which is a better choice?

    Sir,
I secured AIR-217 in GATE-2011 Instrumentation Engineering with a GATE Score of 594. I did write GATE-10 as well but was not qualified. I completed my B.Tech in 2010 so its already a gap of 1year. I did not get in any of the IITs.

Sir, i would like to have your opinion about whether i should go for NITs or should i wait and try for IITs next year. Based on my GATE score i was called for an interview in IOCL but didn’t get through. They asked me about my 1year lag already. Please help me out from this situation…..whether to go for NITs or write GATE-2012.

  40. vikrant

gr8 mr. writer i really appreciate ur basis for ranking new iits above nits or bits.u r true that although the new iits are underestimated today but they have a great power underneath which is its brand IIT.IIT is IIT no one can take its place as a prestige symbol.those who comment negatively on this must try to understand the basis, specially those who give angry comments only bcoz their college is ranked low in ur list…and thanks to amitava u r right i ur reply…

@mayank : It seems a case of sour grapes. Some people who could not get into IIT/BITS are taking their frustrations out here. Thats it. Otherwise just naming few of people from NITs( and there are too many of them ) who have succeeded does not make NIT better than IIT. I can name people who have not been to any college and hav made it big. Does that mean you should not go to college ? If i start naming people from IITs who have made big, the list will be endless ( and till recently there were only 7 of them compared to 20 odd NITs ). In fact, your grammar, maturity and writing just puts your college in poor light, if at all you go to a college. I won’t be surprised if you are doing BA sanskrit from a tier 3 university.

Now its not about the brand, you compare the IITs with any other college in India on any parameter that you know of ( quality of faculty, achievement of alumni, infra, research output in number of papers/patents etc). I can very well challenge you that they will very easily beat even the best of NITs. In my opinion only BITS, IIIT-hyd and DCE are few colleges which can be of the same league.

This opinion of the author is his own opinion and India being a free country everyone can have their opinions. Opinions without any analysis or proof is not accepted by the society. In this case there is no qualitative or quantitative proof that the students of IIT are indeed brighter than all other institutes of India. Since the IITs screen the students at the entrance they indeed allow only the brighter students to enter in.So it is very difficult to pin point the effort of teachers or the institute for success. These bright students may do well if they have gone elsewhere too. It is the general feeling of the people like the author, which makes the bright students to go for IITs. Offcourse you can tell many many many cases where non IITians have excelled and many IITians were also failures.A simple example is how many of the CEOs in India are from IIT? To end my argument, I feel that the author’s opinion belongs to him and we can make our own list.

i am studying in N.I.T. Hamirpur right now in final year. But i am planning to do mtech from some reputed college in india. but i want to ask that was my failure at the jee exam a dead end to all my dreams. if not then what should be my next move. is there some way to improve from this stage?

    1. Zahid

Manoj: Manoj GATE is next opportunity for you to go IITs. and NIT Hamirpur is good too. You are doing great and I hope you will make it to IITs too. Good luck and wish you a wonderful career ahead.

  72. Vikram

@mayank..don’t be so arrogant dude…they have been and will always be superior to us..most of the technocrats working in google, microsoft, yahoo, amazon are from iit..not from nit.its not that they are just superior to us in pcm..infact they are superior to us in many other ways…i accept that not all iitians are greater than nitians but most of them are…its also true that some nits are at par with iits but are NOT superior to them..the quality u’ll find in iits is simply missing in nits..just see the qualification of our professors and the professors in iits.also just see the creativity part..they are way ahead of us..the research environment, infrastructure, etc is simply superb at iits..but it lacks in nits..be realistic yaar..chill…humlog nit se hain to nit wale hi rahenge..we won’t get the same respect that ppl from iits rightly deserve..we should stop fighting on this and do our best wherever we are…btw i am doing my btech from nit surathkal.

Well, an electronics degree at BITS-Pilani, Pilani is much much better than electronics degree from most existing IITs what to talk about new IITs.. Although I have passed out from an IIT my self this year, I have friends studying in BITS and know much about the flexibilities offered in the institute. Its only the IIT craze that is fed into our minds but the fact we much all accept is that there are equally competing institutes in the country.

    hi..

i have got AIR 5240(756 in OBC) in IIT-2010.

AIR 3215 in AIEEE-2010 i have a problem to select which branch and which college to choose.

according to last year analysis.. i may get civil, metallurgy, aerospace(minor chance) in old IIT’s..

    CSE,EEE,mech. branches in IIT-hyd(hometown)..

in NIT warangal i have a chance in CSE,ECE,EEE etc..

what will be the best option?

    * civil, metallurgy in old IIT’s
    * cs,eee in iit hyd.
    * cs,ec,eee etc. in nit-warangal.

  86. Sumit

Sir, i have 31000 rank in aieee can i get govt.college

  87. Aveek

    Sir,
Which is better between ‘Electronics’ in IT-BHU and (Ocean & Naval arch./Mining/Metallurgy/Chemical Engg.) in the old IITs. DOES THE TAG “IT” OF BHU HAVE ANY DISADVANTAGE COMPARED TO THE “IIT” TAG?????

  88. s.tahir

iit’s are the institutes of national importance thus should occupy top place in the ranking.and bits or nits come next.

  89. Aveek

    Sir,
My IITJEE’10 rank(gen) is 3488 and WBJEE’10 rank(gen) is 70. Should I opt for Electronics in Jadavpur(Kolkata) or new IITs?

1)sir i also want to recommend my fellow students that listen to iitians only they can only guide you through the proper ranking ”

Answer : I recommend that you should talk to people from other colleges also. Asking ONLY IITians if their college is the best option for you (given your ranks , preferences) is pointless.

2)Also about bitsat that i have just given bitsat and my score was 372…… BUT I WILL NEVER GO TO BITS PILANI AT THE EXPENSE OF IITs

Answer : And BITS Pilani isn’t ? What do you know about BITS , that makes u assume such things?
Guess who made Hotmail ? Or who started companies like Onida , I-Flex, Microtek? Or where our Minister for Sci and Tech did his BE ? Or who are/have been the CEOs of companies like Wipro,Dabur,Ford Motors India, Cholamandalam,SAIL,AMKETTE,Eicher Motors, helpage India? Or who invented the PARAM Supercomputer and the Simputer ?

All answers found here : http://www.bitsaa.org/?page=whoswho

Would you be rather stuck in a college with no facilities and studying a course which you have no interest for a tag, rather than seeing whats best for you and your career?

3)About bits pilani that β€˜It is wrong that students of bits pilani are good or they are smart’ because as you can see the format of bit sat exam it allows only those student to take the exam who have secured more than 80% in their PCM BOARD EXAM. So many talented students do not get admission to bits pilani even they are smater than the rest but only because of board exam they could not make it ,this also reduces compition in bit sat exam. That why i say that student quality of bits pilani is doubted….

Answer: Did you know that many of the IIMs don’t even consider if you have less than 85% marks in your Board exams irrespective of your CAT score?? What about them?? IIM-B gives more weigtage to 10th and 12th Board marks than it gives to CAT score.

If they are so smart , how come they can clear all other competitive exams , yet fail to get 80% + ? Maybe its becuz BITS doesnt want unidirectional coached students who have no soft skills ?

My advice to you : I understand that you have sacrificed a lot for IIT JEE.But thats the past now.Dont let it affect your judgement.Find out info on all colleges that you can get into.Given your expected rank in IITJEE , you do NOT stand a chance of getting a good course. So please choose wisely. Remember that your entire career depends on the choices you make now.Best of Luck

    @Ani :

    1) Yes but given your limited faculty strength , it limits the no. of interdisciplinary courses. Also faculty have their specializations; so you may not find a good faculty member to do projects in the area you want.

    2) Yes that is expected. However its the implementation that counts.

    3) Research labs will take time. Common academic labs are found in all AICTE colleges in India.

    4) Yes student input is excellent.

I wish you and your IIT the best of luck.

sir i got 1345 rank in sc . there are total 1426 seats while 1773 students are selected by jee. what branch i can get in new iits also suggest more promising new iit

  93. ***ani

    gr8………
i was expecting same response for newer iits……..
actually i am in one, doing my 2nd year in computer science and engg.
and let me tell u in spite of all problems that we have wid new iits its always better to be in a new iit than old universities and nits.
I am not telling an absurd thing,i have my grounds to stay wid..
1)faculty is highly qualified as they have to fulfill more than a dozen of norms and qualifications to be over there.and actually that’s reason
    for having limited faculty.
2)Course design is the most terrific thing as most of them have adapted it from their mentor iits or have taken it wid slight modification.
They make you get maximum utilization of intellectual power in best books & brains.
3)Laboratories are most important for a technical institutes and most of us think that it is the thing that a new iits lags behind in.Its quite true
that the labs can’t be compared wid the old iits, but the point u should notice is that the no of students in new iits is also as small as 40 student
per branch per year which don’t need that large lab.The authorities are trying their best to establish labs. and they are quite successful wid that too.
4)student quality of course which is ensured as the common entrance for all through iit jee.and yes i heard that a large no students refused admissions at
new iits that’s just because of there is always a chance of betterment and they would have thought to take second chance but what i know is that as large
as 90% of them have taken admissions.
and at last its an open platform and i am just giving my point of view and this does not mean that i am against all nits and older universities over new iits.
at the end of day choice is going to be yours and its not the case that i am in one such institute so i am favoring it.i have talked to many of my friends
over different institutes in India and then i get to know of these differences.

  94. neeraj

    sir,

Talking about new IITs….even IIT Guwahati is a comparatively new IIT and by far the fastest developing IIT….so you said that the new IITs will become better than the old ones…does that include Guwahati also???…i have heard from many people that IIT-G has awesome physics and mechanical faculty…is it true???

  95. phoenix

I have been very fortunate in knowing quiet a large number of IIT students and NIT students. There is no question that both these category are brilliant as they enter college as freshers. The NITians have a bit more relaxed approach towards life and the environment in the NITs suits them and finally end up completing their graduation not being very technical. On the contrary the IITians have a tendency to turn geeky and although they turn out strong in their technical abilities, their social skills are quiet affected (atleast the hard core techies) . Further both types are equally brilliant, but IITians are hard working and NITians Lazy. They finally end up with completely different skill sets in the end. Put the NITians on the business side and IITians on the technology side – I guess the company will do well.

  98. vivi

well it may be just speculations and not reality about the status and i doubt if first batch of new iit will get placement better than bits/dce. Noway, if u think about student quality , let me clear 30% of dce mech and 20% of whole dce are iit qualified. and some left the iit at even 2385 rank or so….. and apart from infra (i guess they may take years, not at all u will get that in 4 years) , there is alumni thing also which is helpful in all way….i myself left new iit’s even coe iit raj for dce eee…and there are many people to do this. plus there was already an article regarding how many left iit (nearly 600 left for other institute) even 200 left iit roorkee. so i m not pleased with the explanation and think these rank will misguide the freshers…..

    1. Zahid

Vivi: Its simple Vivi if you left new IITs for some college doest mean that everyone have to do same or thing in same direction. Please read all comment we have people left BITS CS to join new IITs. The people who left IIT Roorkee and others are obsessed with the place like Delhi or so. Please keep in mind IITs are not some college that need time to establish and IITs have a greater alumni network than any other college India. When someone come and ask an IITian, they answer I m from IIT. Then deeper IIT some place. It indicates that, this is a common class of people who share a great attitude.
I wish you a great luck with your decision.

sir im of sc caste . .shud i need to submit this year caste certificate or i can apply old one . .

  100. nitin

    nitesh..

like the author already said he is basing the rankings on “Here I present a list for top ranked Engineering schools in India based on Student quality and preference, Faculty, Infrastructure and Industry interface or placements”
the last question u asked is answered.

iits are a brand people would die for, they are india’s elite institutions,i need no facts to support it because the world knows it.

well, you said that iitians are proud haughty etc etc, you mean to say nitians are so down-to-earth personality rite???!!nice joke!!

u say iitians are lesser hard working than nitians, well u must have never heard about the preperation needed to crack the jee,and let me tell you most people who qualify jee qualify aieee also,i dont think the opposite statistics is worth mentioning

iitians may not have bagged the nobel prize, neither have the nitians, but who are behind the success of isro, drdo, ins arihant those are the best brains workin for india, most of the engineers are iitians

so just spew out your iit hatred and accept the fact that iit>>>>nits, bits etc…..

lastly, about the initial edge you take two people one iitian, one nitian same talent same dedication, still the iitian would be favoured…

    1. Zahid

Nitesh and all: I totally agree with Nitin, I could not answer because I was too busy GATE results analysis for M.Tech admissions. And also felt not important to answer it, as almost everyone know the facts.

only think i would like to ask you all who think IITs are comparable to any other institute in India to read a book bySandipan Deb “The IITians: The Story of a Remarkable Indian Institution and How its Alumni Are Reshaping the World”.

I says all about IITian behind the curtain of Indian state development in home and abroad. IITians contribution to Indian economy and in developing the brand India in technology.

Truth be to told, IITs are Temple, Masjid, Church and Gurdwara of people try to excel wherever they go.

THIS IS THE ASNWER TO YOU ALL MY MATES HERE YOU HAVE PLACED NEW IITS ABOVE OLDER NITS LET ALONE NEW IITS THERE IS NOT A SINGLE IITIAN WHO HAVE WON NOBEL PRIZE FOR INDIA INFACT LET ALONE NOBEL PRIZE NO IITIAN TILL DATE HAS WON BHARAT RATAN INFACT LET ALONE BHARAT RATNA LEAVING MR MOORTHY THE FOUNDER OF INFOSYS WHO HAS DONE MTECH FROM IIT NO IITIAN TILL DATE HAS WON PADMA VIBHUSAN AND YOU ARE CALLING THAT THEIR GRADUATES ARE SUPERB . TO ALL THE STUDENTS I WANT TO SAY THAT THOUGH IIT BRAND WILL GET YOU INITIAL EDGE OVER OTHER STUDENTS BUT REMEBER HARD WORK HAS NO SUBSTITUTE AND I HAVE SEEN IIT STUDENTS WHO BECUASE OF THEIR OVER PROUDNESS ARE OVERTAKEN BY NITIANS ITS A FACT THAT NITIANS ARE NOT BRIGHTER THAN IITIANS OR BITSIANS ARE NOT BRIGHTER THAN IITIANS BUT NITIAN AND BITSIAN ARE MUCH MORE HARDWORKING THAN THEM.

I WANT TO TELL ONE MORE THING THE GREAT ALBERT EINSTEIN HE CAN BE CONSIDERED AS THE ONE OF THE MOST BRIGHTEST BRAIN EVER BUT IF HE WOULD HAVE JUST SIT IN THAT THOUGHT EVEN HE CANT DO ANYTHING.
THE GREATEST INVENTOR TILL DATE EDISON EVEN DONT GO TO HIGHER SECONDARY SCHOOL. SO MATE ON WHICH BASIS YOU ARE SAYING THAT NEW IITS ARE BETTER THAN NITS

I find such discussions very obvious by aspirants or fresh graduates. Being a BITSian and close associate of IITians, Purdue, MIT and Stanford’s graduate, I would like to put my comments without trying to offend anyone’s personal perspective.

    First a few facts:

Very few might be aware that Govt. has tried bringing BITS, Pilani under IIT banner way back in 70s. BITS opted to remain autonomous for reasons. Further, BITS neither get govt. funding (except a few projects) nor tried to attract such funds. BITS keeps the decision, pertaining to the quality and methodology, within the campus. No external intervention, though transparent. This takes courage, vision and confidence about the pedagogy. And it gives BITS strength too.

BITS, Pilani has brought up remarkable innovations in the Indian academics viz. Practice school concept (Industry – Institute collaboration), Vertical exchange education system, Innovative teaching methods viz. web based classroom….. to name a few, list is quite long.

BITS and MIT’s association revamped the education system for sure. And the Alma-mater is continuing to do so. This innovative approach is what required in professional education.

You may say, these are there in other institution too. Right you are. But other institute adopted it later.

I do agree with Zahid, that the quality of student help making the institute’s reputation. In the same note I would like to convey that it is apparent that BITSians are in esteemed position both in academics and in corporate (can be searched in web too). So the quality of input by BITS can’t be questioned.

In BITS, students are made self motivator, some find it dissatisfying as they join with a mind set that the institute will spoon feed each concept and might start looking out with a hope for the same by some other institute, which he won’t find anywhere.

BITS provide everything required grooming one’s career but the height of success depends on individual’s dedication and determination.

In my comment I didn’t try to compare BITS with other institute, because I personally believe that it is an individual strength which actually matters, otherwise the entire listed institute by Zahid has the required infrastructure to give a kick start to any aspirant’s career.

I can assure that BITS has enough experience and capabilities to lead the education system for many more years to come along with other Tier-I Institute.

β€œPlease don’t look things like me=BITS=best or me=IIT=best or so on”. Acquire knowledge because knowledge only helps getting us a place in the crowd.

  107. neeraj kumar singh

well mate i m a fourth yr stud in jadavpur university…well all i would say is placement wise bits/ nits/ju all r very good but iits have the best in terms of everything.even though the new iits are starting to have full infra, like iit patna, they may have some problems no doubt as nothing is perfect initially iit will take some time but “the iit tag” will make a difference as the best go to iits.believe me on this and dont go to placements n all they are always misleading.the only manta is “there is nothing like iits” in engg scenario.only if u dont get ur preference stream in new iits then opt for nots/bits/ju/dce else only iits.u take student quality/infra/faculty/nyhting iits are no match.take my word i am a 4th year in jadavpur university i know the difference very well.

  108. Anonymous

Its a shame that such sites mislead the students and make decision making a difficult process for them. The actual fact is that the students who get jee ranks below 2700 prefer the older IITs. The ones after that usually prefer BITS Pilani,NIT warangal,Trichy, suratkal.
The ones who take admission in the new IITs either do not have a good score in BITSAT or AIEEE or are lured by the IIT tag. But in today’s world one must always understand that its not the tag that matters rather its the quality of education that you get. And undoubtedly, the quality of education of institutes like BITS Pilani and NIT Warangal is far better than the new IITs. Talking about BITS pilani it ranks above a few older IITs too namely guwahati and roorkee.

What I feel is that one must not only see the current conditions but also try to visualize where you will be after another 5-10 odd years.
In a nutshell the top 10 are all equal and go for a better discipline rather than the ones like foodtech. mining, etc. People in such trades usually end up with a consultancy job. So its up to you that u want to be an engineer by choice or one who is forced to.

  109. Razorsharp

I have read many news-articles/blogs about the new IITs and they are not very encouraging. While it can be said that Placements will be good (but IMO not as good as older IITs) , what about student life??Extra co-curricular activities , hostel life , labs , clubs , cultural/technical festivals , entreprenuership opportunities…..what about all these?
It would be nice if some NEW IIT student gives us an insider’s look.

  110. mayank

i m studying at iit bhubaneswar n its infrastructure sucks!!!

  111. vivek

    dear zahid sir
i m in a new iit at rupnagar and got admission this year only .i was getting admission in older nit’s also. But coming here does not make me much delighted as there is not much infrastructure here and labs and workshops aren’t fully ready yet.
do you think this can affect my career ?
also can such things ruin the student quality next year onwards?
what do you think of the placements in new iit’s?

  112. Akhilesh

which is better ism or bits

  113. Zahid

Ammu: Better you would have asked this question under some other post, like Ranking of engineering colleges in india.
I prefer IIIT DM over private state engineering colleges. But when it comes govt. state engineering colleges opinion may differ.

Abhishek Pradhan: Thanks Abhishek for the support. I ranked colleges based on student quality and strongly believe that should be the major parameter for ranking. Thanks again for the support.

Razorsharp: Sorry if you felt offended, but we never underestimated BITS pilani. We always ranked it higher and tried to find a right place for it. Ranking is totally based on students quality and the criteria mentioned above in the post. Hope based on that BITS is on it right place.

  114. Razorsharp

Look , as far as BITS-Pilani is concerned , you all have seriously underestimated it.BITS-Pilani has been consistently ranked higher than IIT-G/R in most surveys.
Check out these points why I feel that BITS will do better than the new IITs:

1)Placements:See the companies here , as good as any of the older IITs:
    http://discovery.bits-pilani.ac.in/placements/

2)Alumni :HUGE alumni support!!!Want some big names?Chk here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_BITS_alumni
Chk the list and see the no. of CEOs!!
How many such top names does IIT-G/R have??

3)Practice School , a 6 month long compulsory work-ex course with stipend at some of the best companies in India and abroad.Read here:

    http://www.bits360.com/forum/bits-practice-school-system-complete-info-t1232.html

Chk the big names where BITSians get walk-in internships WITHOUT APPLYING to the company!!

While the Govt Research Labs don’t offer jobs through PS2 , a most of the top companies offer jobs(On-Campus placements aren’t the only source of jobs , PS2 does acct significantly for it)

    4)Foreign University Admits and Tie-Ups:

    http://discovery.bits-pilani.ac.in/iru_site/mou.html

    And about the admits:

    http://www.bits360.com/forum/bits2msphd-2009-admits-for-ms-phd-t4690.html

    http://www.bits360.com/forum/admits-for-ms-phd-fall-2008-t1225.html

I am not saying that the new IITs are crap.I think they have great student input + brand value. But I don’t think that makes BITS-Pilani “nothing” in front of it.

  115. Kumar Ashwani

It is my request to the moderator of this blog.Since I dont have my own domain I would like to post my views on this site if owner agrees.I would give frequent comments about the hapennings in new iits especially my own proud institution IIT Ropar.

If the owner is interested, owner can contact me at [email protected].

  116. abhishek pradhan

i totally dis agree with Akshay.
as if he doesnt know that IIT students r the best engg of India.
Even if they have passed form new IITs.
they have passed one of the toughest exam of India.

Zahid sir u have given the best ranking of ever.

  117. Ammu

What is your opinion about Electronics engineering in IIIT DM in Kancheepuram, Chennai. Is it better than EEE in a State Engg. College

Shrey Malik, Kumar Ashwani: Thanks a lot for a detailed reply. Expecting a better answer than what Ashwani gave is injustice.
My point here is pretty clear, good quality of students will fetch everything for institute whether it is placement infrastructure or something else. Since 2005 I was against the ranking made by news agencies giving high ranks to private universities.
To share with you all, I had offer for being faculty at BITS and do my PhD there. But I went for IIT Roorkee with a less scholarship, because IIT is IIT.
Thanks you both for such a great and informative input, specially to Ashwani for taking pain and writing a detailed comment. Hope this will help many students to make a correct decision. Stay connected and lets make really helpful for students πŸ™‚

Ashwani: You can definitely be a part of this, I will send you an email about ‘being a author’ with details, we will provide you space and freedom to moderate comments on your posts. The good news is that we have around 2000 page reviews a day and its increasing every day and most of the pages gone up in google ranking.

I am a student of IIT Ropar(one of the new IITs).None of u may have seen any of new IIT ,I supposed that is why your comments are like this.I am a student of second year CSE.Let me make all of u clear about various things.
INPUT QUALITY:-In my batch ranks were from 1415-2555.So if any one of u have checked counselling brochure of 2009 you could see the quality of students. It is not like that students were n.ot getting anything in old IITs.I will give you a glimpse of what myself and other classmates would have got in old IITs.
IIT Bombay(metallurgy B.Tech and dual both.there are other M.Sc courses bt those are nt worth to be mentioned.
IIT Delhi(civil, dual chemical and other courses like textile, biotech etc.)
IIT Madras(aero, chemical, civil and many courses as IITM gives many courses unlike IITD or IITB.
    IITR-(electrical,mechniacal and list goes on)
IIT Guwahati(Everything any of the course be it CSE)
IIT Kanpur(chemical, civil and many other courses)
IIT Kharagpur(except few top branches like CSE,EE,MECh almost all other branches)
    ITBHU(everything)
If anyone of you have check their AIEEE ranks none of you would have commented.Nearly 15% below 1000(AIR),next 40%(below 2000) and nearly 90% of batch has ranks within 3000.3000 is a type of rank which would have surely fetched you any NIT and any course there(check AIEEE sites.)

Check their BITS score.50-60% of them have BITS score more than 360 that would have easily fetched them CSE there.

So,considering students quality none of u must comment.

FACULTY:-Quality of faculty can be seen by their resumes. Many new IITs have not recruited faculties but the makeshift faculties are not bad.The makeshift faculties consisits only n only of proffesors teaching in Old IITs.If u consider them poor then no one can help u.
The minimum eligibility for faculties in IITs is PhD.So you can imagine their quality.

INFRASTRUCTURE:-All the new IITs have all those facilities n labs required for them. The infrastructure will come in 3-4 years bt you have not die for infrastructure. They provide you all the facilities as required.I have my friends in NIT Trichy,NIT Suratkal.I know their standard of living. The facilities provided to us is far far better than NITs.I have not seen BITS so I cant comment on them. The guy of Rupnagar who has left IIT Patna for BITS will regret after sometime. It is my personnel experience.

Last year I visited IIT Madras for counselling.I met a student there. He was studying in BITS Pilani CSE(second year). His rank was not good in JEE even then he was there for any branch to be offered in IIT be it design or architecture. So you can think Is BITS Pilani comparable to Any IIT be it NEW or OLD?Ask BITSians only if the package offered by IIT Guwahati was better or BITS Pilani in 1999(when Guwahati conducted its first placement).Ask only those whom you know beforehand because others will simply tell that BITS pilani is good.

All my friends the things which you see from outside is not always true.

I am considering to write few blogs on it.I would ask the admin of this blog if he could provide some space for my blog.
Contact me for any doubts regarding anything which is related to engineering(only BE or B.Tech).I will provide you the guys who would reaaly help you.
My contact email id is [email protected]

IITs also have ALL PHd faculties dude,, new or old.
The best thing is they are central govt. controlled and so they dont have to care for funds until the INDIA goes bankrupt.

  121. Shrey Malik

    This is for Akshay above:
I am giving an example of someone who dropped BITS PILANI fro IIT Patna
Mr. Devulapalli Vasu , He got 410 out of 450 in BITSAT, and thus would have got ANYTHING in BITS PILANI !! But he preferred an IIT ,, a new one why?
Thats the difference bw a new IIT and bits Pilani.
    dont beleive me contect him:

Rahul: Sure thanks for the request. I will give a complete post covering preparatory courses offered at IITs. Thanks again.

Anirudh: As it is not converted yet, I think its current position is suitable. Once its changed we can consider about faculty and then consider for repositioning.

Narendra: Please give me some time to write a complete post in it. Thanks again for suggestion.

Sanjeev Kataria: I strongly believe that student quality matters a lot and definitely new IITs will have good students. The difference will be visible very soon. I believe even right from first batch they will show that results. Thanks for comment.

Ramesh: That is dedicated amount for infrastructure development and also they have share in whole budget allocated to IITs. The target of all the new IITs is to shift with two year time span. Classes will held in new campus within two years. Please refer to above post last few paras on BITS pilani.

  123. ramesh

LISTEN THE BUDGET CAREFULLY . THE GOVT. HAS GIVEN 450 CRORE RUPEES TO NEW IITS +NITS . THE SUM U ARE TELLING IS GIVEN TO IITS + NITS (OLD + NEW). i live in rupnagar where new iit is being made. it will take 4-5 years to build the new institute . they are currently starting the classes in a polytechnic college which has poor infrastructure and no campus life. also i left iit patna for bits pilani which is more reputed , has better infrastructure , faculty, good placement thru PS systems. your rankings r really misleading.

  124. SANJEEV KATARIA

    well , Mr. Zahid.
i agree with your decision of placing new IITs b4 old NITs etc.

well i am of the view that the thing that makes any institute top class is the students studying in it .
and we all know clearing JEE is no easy task.
and why do u guys forget that the students in these new IITs could have taken admission in any other old IITs as they cracked JEE .
so if that is it why do you underestimate these new IITS.

  125. narendra

    sir
after reading this i put a question in front of you
iam select in prep course in iit rajasthan and for btech in mnit jaipur with it branch.
please tell me which is better.

  126. anirudh

its has recently been announced by the folks in the LS that it bhu is gonna be converted into an iit.
would you rank an iit-bhu higher than or lower than any of the old iits.

  127. rahul

    Hi Zahid,

Can you please throw some light on the preparatory courses offered to a student.
What is its success ratio of this course, as this course are already run for SC/ST for past couple of years at IITs? The candidate (PD) has got this preparatory seat against vacant CSE at one of new IIT.

    Thanks

  128. Zahid

V.sri harsha: This question is much suitable under “Which is the best engineering course” https://www.inspirenignite.com/which-is-the-best-engineering-course/
    πŸ™‚
Anyways I definitely prefer ISMU because admission is through JEE and and its ranking is great because of faculty and infrastructure.

Derekpm: Thanks a lot for appriciation. I will be keep updating it with new useful and informative posts, keep visiting.

Sabreen: First of all accept my heartiest congratulation for making it to IIT. I m happy the it helped you be happy and confidant about your decision. Admission to IIT is no doubt a big achievement, but its just a beginning of a new life. Work hard be the best among best. Give equal importance to both acads and extra curricular actives. I wish you a great luck and bright future.

  129. Sabreen

Thanks,,, I’m really relieved, coz i got iit patna and was wondering abt what it would be like coz it was new

  130. derekpm

Rather interesting. Has few times re-read for this purpose to remember. Thanks for interesting article. Waiting for trackback

  131. v.sri harsha

sir which is better option – cse in ismu dhanbad or ece in nit surat in gujarat

  132. Akshay

Do you honestly think, that even after so many years, when BITS Pilani has not been taken over by the likes of IIT-Roorkee, and IIT-Guwahati, these new IITs will rank better than it? Infrastructure doesn’t mean better buildings – it includes labs and instruments which take time to build up. It’s a joke if you think new IITs are better than BITS and NITs (or are anytime soon going to be!). It would take time for them to come up, and at least for next 10 years, I have no expectations that they will be anywhere close to even top 15 colleges in India.

PS: BITS Pilani also has all PhD graduates as faculty. If not, then they are currently pursuing PhD at BITS under the guidance of BITS faculty.

PS2: Even if student quality is concerned, I don’t know a single ‘sane’ student who would leave BITS Pilani degree for the new-IIT tag (even if a better branch is concerned)

PS3: That handsome budget includes the old IITs too. I guess you forgot to read that.

    1. anonymous

Very well said…BITS doesnt have reservations at all…the admission is purely based on merit…You cant have a better student quality than that…as for IIT almost 50% seats are reserved…guess you forgot to mention that.
