My ranking of engineering colleges across India is really a big hit. Google indexed it among top pages and readers and other bloggers gave it a best possible list status. Thanks to everyone who visited and commented it. Apart from appreciation, I also received harsh responses from readers, specially for ranking new IITs so high in ranking, above old NITs and Universities. Few readers questioned for not adding few private universities, which were ranked as top engineering schools by some news agencies.
In this post, I sincerely try to answer all those reader and clear the doubts of many other students, who always have these questions in mind but could not find a right place to ask. Hope you find it useful. Drop you comments if you have any doubts, suggestion or question about this subject.
Why to add new IITs in ranking?
The answer to this question is very simple. Because they are taking admission from this year and being a student who is willing to opt for an engineering course, one seeks their ranking and position to make a right decision. Therefore, if I want to help these students who are taking admission this year I should consider new IITs for ranking too.
Why they are ranked so high, even higher than BITS Pilani, Anna Univ and Jadavpur?
If you look into my criteria for ranking many things will be cleared. My criteria was
Here I present a list for top ranked Engineering schools in India based on Student quality and preference, Faculty, Infrastructure and Industry interface or placements.
Every criterion was given preference based on their position in the statement. The first preference is given to Student Quality, next is faculty and then Infrastructure and so on.
I strongly believe, if quality of students is great there will be an excellent placement for campus and a great industry interface too. As industry always look for good quality of students wherever they find then they approach there. This made me to give highest preference to Student Quality. Moreover, placement for this batch is after 4 years and by that these new IITs will have a far better infrastructure than even old IITs. Because of heavy budget of Rs 2800 Crore by Central Government for these new IITs.
According to Student Quality, new IITs will definitely have superiority over all NITs and Universities, at least for Top branches of engineering.
In terms of faculty, IITs do not recruit faculty with less qualification than PhD and they are always open to find best people for them. They need not to advertise for the posts and wait for people to apply like Universities. All NITs and Universities, both government and private, have many faculty members who do not hold a doctorate degree.
A handsome budget of 2113 crore will make a huge infrastructure within four years. This is highest budget allocated to some educational institutes in India before. I strongly believe new IITs will have better infrastructure than old ones too.
Finally, placements, as student quality will be great and the brand IIT will play its magic. There is no doubt about it.
Because of All the factors I was bound to give them high ranking. Given a chance to me I personally prefer new IITs too.
Hope this gives all the answers. If still you have any doubts please don’t hesitate to drop a comment.

Do you honestly think, that even after so many years, when BITS Pilani has not been taken over by the likes of IIT-Roorkee, and IIT-Guwahati, these new IITs will rank better than it? Infrastructure doesn’t mean better buildings – it includes labs and instruments which take time to build up. It’s a joke if you think new IITs are better than BITS and NITs (or are anytime soon going to be!). It would take time for them to come up, and at least for next 10 years, I have no expectations that they will be anywhere close to even top 15 colleges in India.
PS: BITS Pilani also has all PhD graduates as faculty. If not, then they are currently pursuing PhD at BITS under the guidance of BITS faculty.
PS2: Even if student quality is concerned, I don’t know a single ‘sane’ student who would leave BITS Pilani degree for the new-IIT tag (even if a better branch is concerned)
PS3: That handsome budget includes the old IITs too. I guess you forgot to read that.
sir which is better option – cse in ismu dhanbad or ece in nit surat in gujarat
Rather interesting. Has few times re-read for this purpose to remember. Thanks for interesting article. Waiting for trackback
Thanks,,, I’m really relieved, coz i got iit patna and was wondering abt what it would be like coz it was new
V.sri harsha: This question is much suitable under “Which is the best engineering course” http://www.inspirenignite.com/which-is-the-best-engineering-course/
Anyways I definitely prefer ISMU because admission is through JEE and and its ranking is great because of faculty and infrastructure.
Derekpm: Thanks a lot for appriciation. I will be keep updating it with new useful and informative posts, keep visiting.
Sabreen: First of all accept my heartiest congratulation for making it to IIT. I m happy the it helped you be happy and confidant about your decision. Admission to IIT is no doubt a big achievement, but its just a beginning of a new life. Work hard be the best among best. Give equal importance to both acads and extra curricular actives. I wish you a great luck and bright future.
Hi Zahid,
Can you please throw some light on the preparatory courses offered to a student.
What is its success ratio of this course, as this course are already run for SC/ST for past couple of years at IITs? The candidate (PD) has got this preparatory seat against vacant CSE at one of new IIT.
Thanks
its has recently been announced by the folks in the LS that it bhu is gonna be converted into an iit.
would you rank an iit-bhu higher than or lower than any of the old iits.
sir
after reading this i put a question in front of you
iam select in prep course in iit rajasthan and for btech in mnit jaipur with it branch.
please tell me which is better.
well , Mr. Zahid.
i agree with your decision of placing new IITs b4 old NITs etc.
well i am of the view that the thing that makes any institute top class is the students studying in it .
and we all know clearing JEE is no easy task.
and why do u guys forget that the students in these new IITs could have taken admission in any other old IITs as they cracked JEE .
so if that is it why do you underestimate these new IITS.
LISTEN THE BUDGET CAREFULLY . THE GOVT. HAS GIVEN 450 CRORE RUPEES TO NEW IITS +NITS . THE SUM U ARE TELLING IS GIVEN TO IITS + NITS (OLD + NEW). i live in rupnagar where new iit is being made. it will take 4-5 years to build the new institute . they are currently starting the classes in a polytechnic college which has poor infrastructure and no campus life. also i left iit patna for bits pilani which is more reputed , has better infrastructure , faculty, good placement thru PS systems. your rankings r really misleading.
Rahul: Sure thanks for the request. I will give a complete post covering preparatory courses offered at IITs. Thanks again.
Anirudh: As it is not converted yet, I think its current position is suitable. Once its changed we can consider about faculty and then consider for repositioning.
Narendra: Please give me some time to write a complete post in it. Thanks again for suggestion.
Sanjeev Kataria: I strongly believe that student quality matters a lot and definitely new IITs will have good students. The difference will be visible very soon. I believe even right from first batch they will show that results. Thanks for comment.
Ramesh: That is dedicated amount for infrastructure development and also they have share in whole budget allocated to IITs. The target of all the new IITs is to shift with two year time span. Classes will held in new campus within two years. Please refer to above post last few paras on BITS pilani.
This is for Akshay above:
I am giving an example of someone who dropped BITS PILANI fro IIT Patna
Mr. Devulapalli Vasu , He got 410 out of 450 in BITSAT, and thus would have got ANYTHING in BITS PILANI !! But he preferred an IIT ,, a new one why?
Thats the difference bw a new IIT and bits Pilani.
dont beleive me contect him:
http://www.orkut.co.in/Main#Profile.aspx?uid=15977957984885102940
thats his orkut profile
IITs also have ALL PHd faculties dude,, new or old.
The best thing is they are central govt. controlled and so they dont have to care for funds until the INDIA goes bankrupt.
I am a student of IIT Ropar(one of the new IITs).None of u may have seen any of new IIT ,I supposed that is why your comments are like this.I am a student of second year CSE.Let me make all of u clear about various things.
INPUT QUALITY:-In my batch ranks were from 1415-2555.So if any one of u have checked counselling brochure of 2009 you could see the quality of students. It is not like that students were n.ot getting anything in old IITs.I will give you a glimpse of what myself and other classmates would have got in old IITs.
IIT Bombay(metallurgy B.Tech and dual both.there are other M.Sc courses bt those are nt worth to be mentioned.
IIT Delhi(civil, dual chemical and other courses like textile, biotech etc.)
IIT Madras(aero, chemical, civil and many courses as IITM gives many courses unlike IITD or IITB.
IITR-(electrical,mechniacal and list goes on)
IIT Guwahati(Everything any of the course be it CSE)
IIT Kanpur(chemical, civil and many other courses)
IIT Kharagpur(except few top branches like CSE,EE,MECh almost all other branches)
ITBHU(everything)
If anyone of you have check their AIEEE ranks none of you would have commented.Nearly 15% below 1000(AIR),next 40%(below 2000) and nearly 90% of batch has ranks within 3000.3000 is a type of rank which would have surely fetched you any NIT and any course there(check AIEEE sites.)
Check their BITS score.50-60% of them have BITS score more than 360 that would have easily fetched them CSE there.
So,considering students quality none of u must comment.
FACULTY:-Quality of faculty can be seen by their resumes. Many new IITs have not recruited faculties but the makeshift faculties are not bad.The makeshift faculties consisits only n only of proffesors teaching in Old IITs.If u consider them poor then no one can help u.
The minimum eligibility for faculties in IITs is PhD.So you can imagine their quality.
INFRASTRUCTURE:-All the new IITs have all those facilities n labs required for them. The infrastructure will come in 3-4 years bt you have not die for infrastructure. They provide you all the facilities as required.I have my friends in NIT Trichy,NIT Suratkal.I know their standard of living. The facilities provided to us is far far better than NITs.I have not seen BITS so I cant comment on them. The guy of Rupnagar who has left IIT Patna for BITS will regret after sometime. It is my personnel experience.
Last year I visited IIT Madras for counselling.I met a student there. He was studying in BITS Pilani CSE(second year). His rank was not good in JEE even then he was there for any branch to be offered in IIT be it design or architecture. So you can think Is BITS Pilani comparable to Any IIT be it NEW or OLD?Ask BITSians only if the package offered by IIT Guwahati was better or BITS Pilani in 1999(when Guwahati conducted its first placement).Ask only those whom you know beforehand because others will simply tell that BITS pilani is good.
All my friends the things which you see from outside is not always true.
I am considering to write few blogs on it.I would ask the admin of this blog if he could provide some space for my blog.
Contact me for any doubts regarding anything which is related to engineering(only BE or B.Tech).I will provide you the guys who would reaaly help you.
My contact email id is kumartheashwani@gmail.com
Shrey Malik, Kumar Ashwani: Thanks a lot for a detailed reply. Expecting a better answer than what Ashwani gave is injustice.
My point here is pretty clear, good quality of students will fetch everything for institute whether it is placement infrastructure or something else. Since 2005 I was against the ranking made by news agencies giving high ranks to private universities.
To share with you all, I had offer for being faculty at BITS and do my PhD there. But I went for IIT Roorkee with a less scholarship, because IIT is IIT.
Thanks you both for such a great and informative input, specially to Ashwani for taking pain and writing a detailed comment. Hope this will help many students to make a correct decision. Stay connected and lets make really helpful for students
Ashwani: You can definitely be a part of this, I will send you an email about ‘being a author’ with details, we will provide you space and freedom to moderate comments on your posts. The good news is that we have around 2000 page reviews a day and its increasing every day and most of the pages gone up in google ranking.
What is your opinion about Electronics engineering in IIIT DM in Kancheepuram, Chennai. Is it better than EEE in a State Engg. College
i totally dis agree with Akshay.
as if he doesnt know that IIT students r the best engg of India.
Even if they have passed form new IITs.
they have passed one of the toughest exam of India.
Zahid sir u have given the best ranking of ever.
It is my request to the moderator of this blog.Since I dont have my own domain I would like to post my views on this site if owner agrees.I would give frequent comments about the hapennings in new iits especially my own proud institution IIT Ropar.
If the owner is interested, owner can contact me at kumartheashwani@gmail.com.
Look , as far as BITS-Pilani is concerned , you all have seriously underestimated it.BITS-Pilani has been consistently ranked higher than IIT-G/R in most surveys.
Check out these points why I feel that BITS will do better than the new IITs:
1)Placements:See the companies here , as good as any of the older IITs:
http://discovery.bits-pilani.ac.in/placements/
2)Alumni :HUGE alumni support!!!Want some big names?Chk here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_BITS_alumni
Chk the list and see the no. of CEOs!!
How many such top names does IIT-G/R have??
3)Practice School , a 6 month long compulsory work-ex course with stipend at some of the best companies in India and abroad.Read here:
http://www.bits360.com/forum/bits-practice-school-system-complete-info-t1232.html
Chk the big names where BITSians get walk-in internships WITHOUT APPLYING to the company!!
While the Govt Research Labs don’t offer jobs through PS2 , a most of the top companies offer jobs(On-Campus placements aren’t the only source of jobs , PS2 does acct significantly for it)
4)Foreign University Admits and Tie-Ups:
http://discovery.bits-pilani.ac.in/iru_site/mou.html
And about the admits:
http://www.bits360.com/forum/bits2msphd-2009-admits-for-ms-phd-t4690.html
http://www.bits360.com/forum/admits-for-ms-phd-fall-2008-t1225.html
I am not saying that the new IITs are crap.I think they have great student input + brand value. But I don’t think that makes BITS-Pilani “nothing” in front of it.
Ammu: Better you would have asked this question under some other post, like Ranking of engineering colleges in india.
I prefer IIIT DM over private state engineering colleges. But when it comes govt. state engineering colleges opinion may differ.
Abhishek Pradhan: Thanks Abhishek for the support. I ranked colleges based on student quality and strongly believe that should be the major parameter for ranking. Thanks again for the support.
Razorsharp: Sorry if you felt offended, but we never underestimated BITS pilani. We always ranked it higher and tried to find a right place for it. Ranking is totally based on students quality and the criteria mentioned above in the post. Hope based on that BITS is on it right place.
which is better ism or bits
dear zahid sir
i m in a new iit at rupnagar and got admission this year only .i was getting admission in older nit’s also. But coming here does not make me much delighted as there is not much infrastructure here and labs and workshops aren’t fully ready yet.
do you think this can affect my career ?
also can such things ruin the student quality next year onwards?
what do you think of the placements in new iit’s?
i m studying at iit bhubaneswar n its infrastructure sucks!!!
I have read many news-articles/blogs about the new IITs and they are not very encouraging. While it can be said that Placements will be good (but IMO not as good as older IITs) , what about student life??Extra co-curricular activities , hostel life , labs , clubs , cultural/technical festivals , entreprenuership opportunities…..what about all these?
It would be nice if some NEW IIT student gives us an insider’s look.
