Doing PhD and how to make best out of it, is still an unexplored topic on blogosphire. Doing phd in india is almost never discussed anywhere except one or two pages by some IIT professors. Here I take the initiative to write everything about PhD, especially in engineering domain. I am highly positive that you will find all the articles very helpful, useful and motivating.
Before I start diving into a series of posts I would like to say few things about me. If you read the about me page on that blog you will find that I did my PhD from IIT Roorkee. I was student at Electronics and Computer Engineering Dept. Just to keep it brief, I finished PhD in 2yr 11 months’ time, and was awarded IBM Best PhD Student award in 2006. I was also a recipient of National Doctoral Fellowship. I am not a professor or lecturer. I work for one best and leading companies in consumer electronics.
Here is a famous myth about phd students.
If you are here let me tell you at least in my case the above statement is completely wrong. I consider my PhD time as one of the blessed times of my life, where I did everything, right from computer science studies to religious studies, Handling B.Tech labs to Contesting elections, organizing conferences to organizing tours. I did almost everything that is possible for studious guy to a back bencher. But best part is I managed to get out even before my seniors did.

I have completed my BTech with specialization in Mechanical and automation in year 2014 after that i have a nearly 1 year work experience. In 2016 in decided to give GATE 2017 and by the grace of the Lord I am getting 72.67 out of 100 and i have checked in various GATE score predictor that my score will be around 780 I am from General category. I am interested in getting admissions in PhD in IITs. I have already read all your post about PhD. I am still having some doubts about it please clarify it.
1.) Which degree IIT will give after doing PhD directly after Btech i.e. PhD degree or both Metch + PhD degree?
2.) If one directly gets into PhD just after Btech is that like without doing separate MTech it is difficult to understand thesis?
3.) What about AICTE norms required for Asst. Prof and Asso. Prof as it requires MTech as well as PhD?
4.) What will be the curriculum of the 5 year PhD program? Is it covering subjects of MTech also in it?

YES. Is it possible to do your PHD after completing B.tech. But for this you will have to cracked the GATE. You get admission in integrated PHD takes 5 years time approx.

hey Vanaras, U have to fill the forms of Different IITs and NITs,
and then u have to go for written test and Interview. Every IIT has different procedure for admission. I can suggest few of them like IIT Delhi, for Electronics they take a conventional exam and mostly they ask questions about Math, signal and system and some of Random Process and variables.
And in Gandhinagar pattern is different like they take 2 test one is of ur field and another is of comman test asking simple electronics questions ( most important thing about IIT gandhinagar is stipend 28K) but they have a very good level of interview)
In IIT Patna they are also having written test about your field then they have a interview round.
In IIT indore they have written test consist of mainly signal system questions followed by an interview round.
But in IIT kanpur they are having only interview round.
and one important thing about all IITs ask about ur M.TECH thesis and it doesn’t matter from which college u are.

it’s about time you addressed the issue.
Yeah I am focused on higher studies, but I occasionally look for advises & honestly a path to higher studies has now become what people called pilgrimage in older days. Mostly I got responses like “so you want to do mtech / phd when you will start earning” or you want to become a lowly teacher and a million other stereotypes.
Well actually I want to go into research and it’s the standard way. I have few question of my own it would be so kind of you if you can answer them for me.
1. Do PhD from different institutes hold different weight-age ? like is the PhD from MANIT, Bhopal holds less water then the one from some IIT or IIIT?
2. can some one pull off a Research career without locating somewhere else, I have my investments, family in my city and I would like to stay here where my roots are, But I dont mind frequent traveling.

no problem, fulltime/ part time after getting the degree both are equal. but the part time phd takes more time, some times it may take more than seven years.

Thanks Zahid for your commitment towards writing the posts on higher education in India.Till these days you were emphasizing mostly on MTech.It’s wonderful that you are thinking beyond and started to write about Ph.D because, for people who have done BE/BTech in some not-so-famous engineering colleges, dreaming of studying Mtech in IITs should be informed of the prospects of going for PhD as well.I always believe that India can move forward from it’s current state with the image of the “back-office” of the world to the “front-office” of the world only when it nurtures good research capabilities among its students and this is possible through people passing out of PhD.It also offers an exciting career of which yours is a bright example. I hope that you write on various things on this topic like “Opportunities after PhD”, “PhD in India v/s outside India”,”Should one know before-hand of the PhD topics to choose” etc.I appreciate your efforts whole-heartedly….

It will be better if you specify what are the openings for students post Phd other than to join teaching or research!!!That is what most of people have ambiguity in!!

can anybody tell me that whether gate is necessary for phd also???i am doing mtech in vlsi design through gate 2012 bt my score is not very good…plz tel me…1)whether a vry high gate score is needed for phd 2)can i give gate again 3)what type of questions do come in the interviews 4)is there any aptitute paper…kindly sir reply …:) i have no idea at all….

I am studying Mtech in IIT guwahati now in 3rd semester. I do want to do Phd but I have a small confusion regarding this. If I continue phd here itself I need not have to take course work again which mean 1 year can be saved. Is it better for me to continue Phd here or Should I apply in other good institutes than IIT Guwahati
