Few Good Places To Do PhD In India

I started writing a complete guide for PhD at InI Research just to make a difference between M.Tech and research programs.

Since I was in M.Tech final semester I started looking good places in India to conduct research in computer science and engineering. After making three failed attempts to IISc Bangalore, I started looking for alternatives to do PhD that could get me recognition as well as security in terms of job and position.

Selecting a place for research can be a difficult choice and may depend on many factors. Choosing a very good place like IISc may not be good for everyone. As a case one may end up fighting problems with too high standards of the institute and take over 5 yrs to finish PhD and sometime drop the plan for a job. On the same time opting for a part time PhD may not satisfy you or may not be able to fetch recognition and a respectable job.

It also depends on reasons for doing PhD. If one need a PhD for his promotion in academics career, hike in salary, or stable job in academics then usually state run universities and part time PhDs do for these causes. Going to good places for PhD may lead to regret as they will take over 5yrs and without a good motivation it will be real pain.

It also depends on age and motivation. If one is about 40yrs of age with two kids, usually they prefer just PhD degree, rather than the interest to contribute. But there are exceptions too. But for young people it is always recommended to opt best schools in India to have a good research exposure and career.

Many Universities and Institutes including private institutes in India are now offering PhD in Engineering and Sciences. The institutes I preferred during my quest for PhD are below. India will be a great place for PhD if you how to work in limited resources. The list is as blow for engineering and sciences.

Indian Institute of Science (IISc)
Indian Institute Technology (IITs)
Tata Institute of Fundamental Reseach (TIFR)
Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI)
Indian Statistical Institute Kolkata (ISI)
Hyderabad Central University (HCU)
Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU)

There are other dedicated research centers supported by CSIR and other research agencies in India, that offer PhD and Masters programs in a specialized field. I will try to post a comprehensive list of research centers and their specialization on this blog. And will start a page for PhD Admissions in India. You can find ranking of Indian Institutes based on research here.

  35. Tanmoy

I passed M.Tech in CS from NIT Trichy (2013 batch).
Now, I am keenly interested to do PhD from a recognized university in India.

However, the remuneration during PhD is too less. I am 28 now. So, for me, this amount could not be sufficient in near future.
Could any one suggest any idea to overcome this issue during PhD tenure ?

  41. Mohammed Vaseem

    Assalamu alykum Zahid,

I completed my PG now. I don’t have any experience in teaching or in Software industry. Is it mandatory to have an experience in any of the above work areas or not required to get admitted to Ph.D. as am willing to continue my education?

Am from south India. Could you please provide your valuable suggestions in choosing universities/course to take. I am a computer Science student in B.Tech, M.Tech.

    Thanks in advance.

    Regards,
    Vaseem.

    1. Shashank

Hey Vaseem! Bro, PhD does not require any experience in India. If you are applying abroad then they need research experience. In India, the best option is to qualify CSIR’s JRF exam conducted twice a year (Dec and June). The following link provides the syllabus for the exams:
      http://www.edunewsask.com/2013/08/csir-ugc-net-syllabus-2013-for.html
Other details about the fellowship are available on this page on the left pane:

  45. noopur

that was pretty good!! can u ellaborate on the careers after ph.D in CS and some reasons as to why should one go for ph.d(if at all interested) rather than joining an MNC ..

    1. Shashank

The choice varies person to person. I understand that MNCs have a lot of lucrative offers but the simple fact remains that if somebody is paying you suppose 2Lakhs/month then you are required to at least put in efforts worth 6 lakhs/month. PhD requires a lot of patience and dedication but the end result is that you will sit comfortable with no pressure of monthly targets etc. It lacks glamor but it makes up for that with the long term comfort it provides.

    1. Kaustav

vijay, with 99 and above percentile in gate you can easily get into IITs or top NITs into the m.tech cse programme.I suggest you go for m.tech first, prepare yourself for 2 years, do a good research project and then go for a ph.d which will be relatively easy.
opportunities after ph.d from IITs are very bright as douring ph.d if you have a good thesis you can either get selected in some r&d organizations or get into academics as a professor with decent salary.

Unfortunately my percentage is not good enough. It is 50.45%. I wonder whether I can apply for PhD in India. Please suggest me something cause getting PhD is very important for me and I am losing my hope. If anyone knows any place in India where my percentage would be accepted, please let me know. Thanks

  72. Deep

    Hi,
Found this link useful – http://www.ias.ac.in/currsci/aug102009/304.pdf . I’m looking forward to your comprehensive post on PhD.

I have few questions. Perhaps you could answer them in your article if not here. I’m currently doing MTech in Thermal Systems Design from NIT Surat. I have an inclination to be in research area with a particular field in Mech Engg. Although current nationwide situation (through my friends’ feedbacks) is not really encouraging. I feel that we do not have extensive emphasis on research here in India.

In spite of securing a higher degree, like MTech/ME from reputed institutes like NITs (IITs are exceptions), and the marking system not being uniform nationwide, employers still look for eligibility in terms of BE marks. There are not many private research institutes in India. This is a bit discouraging. Again the academics/research is not fully integrated with industry and current developments in India. Is it really worth going for a PhD, espacially when I’m not interested in “Teaching” ? How does a PhD from US (or any other country) affect research prospects in India, I do not wish to settle outside India.

    Can you enlighten me ?

  73. Prasanna Kapse

  97. Anand Mishra

Good list. But in Computer Science, IIIT H is also not a bad option to do PhD in India if you are looking for quality research except scholarships are not very good here.

  98. Srikanth

    Hi Zahid,

I am interested in doing a PhD in wireless adhoc networks. My plan is to get into research and then to teach as a professor in that field. But, I ve to say that I was discouraged by a person pursuing PhD in networking at IISc which is the best in India. As told by him, life becomes miserable waiting for hardwares to be approved and the professors using them as lab-rats asking them to repair their home computers and stuff. I will get back with more details on that.

For now, I have a few questions.
    1. Are there any scholarship programs to study abroad?
    2. Is it really worth spending a large chunk of my life doing pursuing PhD here?
    3. What is the average PhD completion time in each of the listed universities?

There are very few information centers online when it comes to doing PhD in India. Thank you very much for your information. I really appreciate what you are doing. Please tell us more about yourself? Are you pursuing PhD right now?

  99. Zahid

Madhur: Thanks a lot the suggestion. I will definitely write a post about Part time PhD soon. Its a good sugession and may help many other friends too. Thanks a lot. Keep visiting. I will post it soon in two weeks.

    Hi,

I am thinking of doing my Phd in India,in the field of Operational research, but I can only do it through part time mode because of some contraints….it is hard to find the right information on net on available courses and research institutes…willing to offer a part time one….it will be very helpful if you could provide some information on your website ..for that or if possible mail me on my address,am a master student in Operational research at School of Mathematics, university of Edinburgh, and have around 3.5 years of work ex as an engineer.

    Regards
    Madhur
