Few good places to do PhD in India
Since I was in M.Tech final semester I started looking good places in India to conduct research in computer science and engineering. After making three failed attempts to IISc Bangalore, I started looking for alternatives to do PhD that could get me recognition as well as security in terms of job and position.
Selecting a place for research can be a difficult choice and may depend on many factors. Choosing a very good place like IISc may not be good for everyone. As a case one may end up fighting problems with too high standards of the institute and take over 5 yrs to finish PhD and sometime drop the plan for a job. On the same time opting for a part time PhD may not satisfy you or may not be able to fetch recognition and a respectable job.
It also depends on reasons for doing PhD. If one need a PhD for his promotion in academics career, hike in salary, or stable job in academics then usually state run universities and part time PhDs do for these causes. Going to good places for PhD may lead to regret as they will take over 5yrs and without a good motivation it will be real pain.
It also depends on age and motivation. If one is about 40yrs of age with two kids, usually they prefer just PhD degree, rather than the interest to contribute. But there are exceptions too. But for young people it is always recommended to opt best schools in India to have a good research exposure and career.
Many Universities and Institutes including private institutes in India are now offering PhD in Engineering and Sciences. The institutes I preferred during my quest for PhD are below. India will be a great place for PhD if you how to work in limited resources. The list is as blow for engineering and sciences.
Indian Institute of Science (IISc)
Indian Institute Technology (IITs)
Tata Institute of Fundamental Reseach (TIFR)
Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI)
Indian Statistical Institute Kolkata (ISI)
Hyderabad Central University (HCU)
Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU)
There are other dedicated research centers supported by CSIR and other research agencies in India, that offer PhD and Masters programs in a specialized field. I will try to post a comprehensive list of research centers and their specialization on this blog. And will start a page for PhD Admissions in India. You can find ranking of Indian Institutes based on research here.

Hi,
I am thinking of doing my Phd in India,in the field of Operational research, but I can only do it through part time mode because of some contraints….it is hard to find the right information on net on available courses and research institutes…willing to offer a part time one….it will be very helpful if you could provide some information on your website ..for that or if possible mail me on my address,am a master student in Operational research at School of Mathematics, university of Edinburgh, and have around 3.5 years of work ex as an engineer.

Madhur
Madhur: Thanks a lot the suggestion. I will definitely write a post about Part time PhD soon. Its a good sugession and may help many other friends too. Thanks a lot. Keep visiting. I will post it soon in two weeks.

Hi Zahid,
I am interested in doing a PhD in wireless adhoc networks. My plan is to get into research and then to teach as a professor in that field. But, I ve to say that I was discouraged by a person pursuing PhD in networking at IISc which is the best in India. As told by him, life becomes miserable waiting for hardwares to be approved and the professors using them as lab-rats asking them to repair their home computers and stuff. I will get back with more details on that.
For now, I have a few questions.
1. Are there any scholarship programs to study abroad?
2. Is it really worth spending a large chunk of my life doing pursuing PhD here?
3. What is the average PhD completion time in each of the listed universities?
There are very few information centers online when it comes to doing PhD in India. Thank you very much for your information. I really appreciate what you are doing. Please tell us more about yourself? Are you pursuing PhD right now?
Good list. But in Computer Science, IIIT H is also not a bad option to do PhD in India if you are looking for quality research except scholarships are not very good here.
i AM DOING M SC(COMPUTER SCIENCE),I LIKE DO Phd in COMPUTER SCIENCE IN IDIA.
PLEASE GIVE ME FULL DETAILS ABOUT PHD DEGREE AND FUTURE GROWTH

Mohammed: Sorry for delayed reply, was little busy with GATE 2011 and M.Tech admissions.
I m going to write a complete PhD Guide specially for Engineering students, once I done with this. Please give me some time.
You can do one thing, write all your questions and mail me at zahid@inspirenignite.com I will make sure to write post on them if they are of general type, otherwise answer your specifically.
Good luck
Dear Sir,

Is it advisable to take admission in PhD directly on basis of Bachelor degree or we should complete our master than apply for it?
I would be oblige if you guide me on the same.

Please do let me know.
Hi gagan! you will be eligible for phd-OR. You just have to find a good place like ISI to do it. Try to ace CSIR. All the Best!!!
