but i wonder about one thing….this year not even a single community for gate is active…last year orkut was active…and inspire n ignite was also active…but dont know wat happened this year!!!???..sadly,.it seems nobody is bothered to share their experience…

I think you can rate the paper in the range of moderate to difficult. There were some time consuming questions there. It’s hard to predict the cut off, especially as the number of applications this year have doubled up

      1. how much u guys getting ?

      1. i am getting 41 . is it a good mark guys pls tel

@prithvi i’m getting 43.67…and guys i agree this years question paper was a good mix of tough and average questions…easy questions were few this time…unlike 2011 exam where around 43 questions were just formula based!!…anything above 40 is good!!…but 50 would be a very solid score!!

@prithvi and ajay…did u guys write targate???…or any other test series??

What is interesting to note is in year 2010 if you scored 50-55 marks your AIR would have been in top 100 , but the same marks in 2011 would give a AIR of 800-900. Not sure how to predict the results this time around.

Has anyone attempted last years (2011) and this years GATE ? If yes, then you can tell us the difficulty in terms of last year.

@Ritesh : I had given Mini TarGate series.

yeah i did attempt gate 2011….i wasnt very well prepared at that time!!…but still got 32!!…to be honest i didnt study anything for gate 2011…and i was wrong in judging the difficulty of the question paper..!!!…i attempted the same gate 2011 paper for my mock test in january..i scored 78!!!…and it was damn easy..there were very few tough questions in gate 2011 but for normal gate paper like 2010 or 2009…55-60 is more than enough to get a good college including IITs..

this year question paper was a standard one..typical gate mechanical!!..u feel proud of attempting that..unlike the lollipop gate 2011..haha

@abhay…oh great so u appeared for targate…cool!!…do u mind telling me ur rank!!??…and ur score in gate 2012??…i just want to compare it and make a pattern or something..i always ranked between 120-170 in targate…and now scored 43.67 in gate 2012..!!..

@ Ritesh : As I had joined mini TarGate , the 6th and 7th test went on tough. I had to get used to level of difficulty. My score was in range of 38-45 and rank 120-80. Next test on wards (8th n beyond) I started doing well, my range was 52-62 marks and rank 40-20. In Gate 2012 according to answer key available on net I am getting 61.67
One more thing the AIR mentioned in TarGate is the predicted AIR or the actual AIR (i.e that many students have appeared for TarGate)

wow…thats awesome man…its not the predicted AIR its the actual AIR…and i think with ur 61.67 u will be easily in the top 50..!!…thanks for sharing ur targate rank!!…my targate score was always in the range of 40-45 and just stayed there..and in gate 2012 also it stayed there!!..consistency is there but i would have loved the consistency in range of 50-55..haha

@ Ritesh: Why are most forums so dull ? I must have searched least a dozen mechanical gate forums, all are dormant. People have become very secretive or very busy to comment …lol

really dont know the reason…last year orkut community was very active..but this year nobody is interested…maybe its because of the question paper!!…dont know the reason….but when i sot the question paper and scanned it for 5 mins…i just thought 50 is more than enough for this one…and i would have got it but i made stupid mistakes in LMTD problem..and drilling time problem!!!..very minute silly mistake..i’m feeling bad about it..but thats the way it is and i have to accept it!!

      1. Ravi Jadhav

yeah…..that’s life……….I also made some silly mistakes….even I searched for active mechanical discussions but didn’t found it anywhere……In my opinion, cutoff will definitely come down but by how much that will be a big question…..bulk will remain in range of 40-50……above 60 will definitely get rank betn 200-300…..bt still due to PSU openings competition will be tough……

I think 60 in gate 2011 wll be equivalent to 52-54.wht do you think guys???

      1. Ritesh Das
        Member

@ravi…yaar its difficult to comapre actually…to be honest gate 2011 is an exception..it shouldn’t be considered for any form of analysis…i think gate 2012 is comparable to gate 2010!!…and i just wish to do mtech..i havent applied for any PSU..i’m very interested in studying further..!!..lets hope for the best…by the way wats ur score ravi??

      1. Ravi Jadhav
        Member

@ritesh……one point to note is that till 2010…all other branches except mechanical had cutoffs for IIT > 45 only mech was the branch where getting 35 to 40 was more than enough to get atleast call from IITs…..bt trend changed from 2011…first papeer was easy that pushed the the boundaries further……this year PSU openings are there….my score is coming 60+-1.33……..even I am very tensed…..btn why didn’t u apply for PSU’s….I think u can still apply for BHEL…….n are u interested in doing MTech from reputed college only????

      1. Ritesh Das
        Member

yeah i am very much interested in studying further!!…and more importantly i dont want to do mtech just for the sake of a degree…i want to do it from a good college…IITs would be great…and i would be more than happy to get into the NITs…i have few favourite courses…i would really like to study and do research before going for a job!!..thats the main reason i didnt apply for any PSU..nothing else!!..

@ravi…how about u???…u give PSUs higher preference???

      1. Ravi Jadhav
        Member

that’s the point I want u to think abt………say for eg. 400 students getting a rank < 1000 prefer PSUs, then definitely merit will come down….but still no one will leave IIT before he confirms his seat in any of the PSUs……so the trend will definitely not be similar to 2011 or 2010……..one thing is imp here if u are interested in studying further then start preparing for ur interviews from now……..that will help u to fill the gap of gate score n for me………..thermal from any IIT will be great bt still packages in PSU are confusing me………….so not sure!!!!!!

I think the dilemma that Ravi faces, would be shared my many of them. Therefore I feel that initially the seat in IIT’s and top NIT’s would be filled but later on as they might move on to PSU’s , wait-listed students will get in. Highly important for IIT & NIT aspirants to keep a look out for vacant seats after initial rounds

      1. Here is what I feel about this year’s gate. Compared to last year which didn’t require much preparation for getting qualifying mark this year’s gate paper needed some effort from students to get the min marks. But for those who have prepared well in all subjects scoring 55+ is very easy only if you didn’t commit many mistakes. I’m saying this because me and my friends who gave our maximum to the preparation are averaging around 60+. I asked few of my colleagues at my gate classes their feedback was also the same. So the people who worked hard are scoring 55-60+ (and there are good number of them I know) and anyone who gave their best but prepared good are getting 40-45. So I think a large portion will fall in 40-50 category those who are above it can expect good rank. But 55+ is a tricky one to say because those who worked hard cannot be counted . I scored 60+ but I’m keeping my fingers crossed :(.

      1. @all,do u guys know anything about the rank reqd in general to get into iit’s for some of popular courses like thermal etc….

@ Chandra Sekhar : I think you pretty much summed it up, no one is sure what to expect.
@ Ganesh: As you would have seen its tough predicting the results. With PSU’s coming to picture it really complicates the scenario. For IIT’s the higher the rank, the better chances you have.

@all……..have u applied for all PSUs????? IOCL, NTPC n BHEL????????
n how many of u are really interested in PG???????
But still I think anyone getting 55+ can expect their AIR <1000…..
wht say guys????…..lets be optimistic n enjoy till 15th March!!!!!!

      1. I guess almost everyone except few applied for PSU’s. No one will leave a PG seat if he is confident of getting in top 4 IIT’s but the guys who can’t get into these 4 will certainly weigh their options so admission to other than top 4 will be spread over a range of ranks I guess. Any rank below 1k has good scope.
