EN3611: Environmental Instrumentation Laboratory syllabus for Env 2021 regulation

Course Objectives:

• To train the students on the use of different instruments used for performance monitoring and testing of equipment in wastewater treatment, air pollution control, effluent analysis and emission monitoring.

    • Sampling Protocol: Planning a Sampling Strategy
    • The Representative Sample: Random vs. Judgmental Sampling
    • Sampling Equipment: Devices and Containers for soil, air and water.

    • Sample Documentation and Preservation, Chain of Custody (COC)
  2. Methods of Analysis
    • Sample Preparation: Interferences and Detection Limits
    • Quality Control
    • Field Quality Control: Duplicate Samples
    • Quality Control in the Laboratory: Equipment Calibration, Matrix spike and Blank samples.
    • Calibrartion
  3. Electrode (potentiometric) Methods:
    • Use of bench top and field model pH meters
    • Use of Dissolved Oxygen Meters.
    • Use of TDS Meters.
  4. Spectrophotometry
    • Estimation of Phosphate.
    • Estimation of Hydrocarbon.
    • Estimation of Nitrogen.
    • Estimation of Heavy Metals.
  5. Chromatography
    • Liquid/Gas Chromatography.
    • Gas Chromatograph.
    • HPLC
  6. High Volume Sampler
    • PM and Gas Pollutant analysis

Course Outcomes:

The students completing the course will have

  1. To conduct treatability studies on water and wastewater treatment
  2. To determine the removal / degradation of pollutants from water and wastewater and arrive at kinetics
  3. To design scaled up reactors for treatment of water and wastewater treatment based on laboratory studies
  4. To determine ambient air quality of given study area in terms of Particulate and Gaseous Pollutants
