Unit I

INTRODUCTION 9
Environment – Definition, Components, impact of man on environment, inter relationship, biodiversity and effects of urbanization. Environmental pollution – classification of pollution -definitions – Effects of industrial effluent – A detailed study of effluents discharged by fibre manufacturing industries, Textile processing industries, Synthetics dyes and Auxiliaries manufacturing industries (origin – characteristics and various mode of treatments. Water pollution – sources and harmful effects, need for protection of river/surface water sources.

Unit II

WATER PARAMETER, STANDARDS AND SOFTENING 9
WHO,ISO standards for raw water criteria, effluent discharge standards for inland surface water, public sewerage, on land for irrigation, marine / coastal areas. Drinking water parameters, constituents of water and their effects in textile processing. Boiler feed water problems, causes, effects and remedies. Boiler water requirement – standards for low and medium pressure boilers at a pressure of 450-500psi – Water softening – need, study of various softening methods -Cation exchange softening, softening by sequestering agents and demineralization with schematic diagram for removal of carbon di oxide and silica, usage of membranes for water softening.

Unit IV

EFFLUENT TREATMENT 9
Specific characteristics of effluent water from various textile processing operations like sizing, desizing, scouring, mercerizing, bleaching, Coloration process (dyeing and printing)- combined effluent -specific Segregation with reason. Various stages of Effluent Treatment – objectives and definition. Detailed study on Primary Treatment – Screening, equalization, neutralization, coagulation and flocculation, settling by clarification. Secondary treatments – Trickling filteration, Activated sludge process, oxidation ponds and Anaerobic digestion; Intermediate processes -sand filter, Activated carbon filter and iron removal filter – Tertiary Treatment – micro filtration, Ultra filtration, Nano filtration, Reverse osmosis, Evaporation – solar and mechanical evaporation -Advantage, Disadvantage. Brief study on modern methods – Electro chemical coagulation, chlorination, ozonization, combined Anaerobic, aerobic biological treatment.

Unit V

SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT 9
Model schematic diagram for effluent water treatment plant for composite textile mills- specific segregation, combined effluent – Treatment steps and working of ETP. Role of pollution control board. Air pollution – sources and effects – Effects of oxides of sulphur on human health, Air pollution control methods, ambient air quality standards. Noise pollution – sources, ill effect ( Auditory and Non auditory ), Noise pollution control and standards noise level in decibels. Solid waste management and principles of sustainable developments.

Course Outcomes:

Upon completion of this course the student shall be able to understand
