Course Objective:

  • To learn basic principles involved in analysis and synthesis of different organic derivatives.

List of Experiments:

  1. Quantitative analysis of organic compounds – Identification of aliphatic/aromatic, saturated/unsaturated compounds.
  2. Identification and characterization of various functional groups by their characteristic reactions:
    1. alcohol,
    2. aldehyde,
    3. ketone,
    4. carboxylic acid,
    5. phenol,
    6. ester,
    7. primary, secondary and tertiary amines and
    8. nitro compounds.
  3. Analysis of an unknown organic compound and preparation of suitable solid derivatives (Benzoic acid from Benzaldhehyde, hydrolysis of ester and meta- dinitrobenzene from nitrobenzene) .
  4. Analysis of carbohydrates.
  5. Analysis of proteins.
  6. Methodology of filtration and recrystallization.
  7. Introduction to organic synthetic procedures:
    1. Acetylation – Preparation of acetanilide from aniline.
    2. Hydrolysis – Preparation of salycilic acid from methyl salyciliate.
    3. Substitution – Conversion of acetone to iodoform.
    4. Nitration – Preparation of m-dinitrobenzene from nitrobenzene.
    5. Oxidation – Preparation of benzoic acid from benzaldehyde/ benzyl alcohol
