METAL CASTING PROCESSES
Sand Casting – Sand Mould – Type of patterns – Pattern Materials – Pattern allowances – Molding sand Properties and testing – Cores -Types and applications – Molding machines – Types and applicationsMelting furnaces – Principle of special casting processes- Shell, investment – Ceramic mould – Pressure die casting – low pressure, gravity- Tilt pouring, high pressure die casting- Centrifugal Casting – CO2 casting — Defects in Sand casting process-remedies

Unit II

METAL JOINING PROCESSES
Fusion welding processes – Oxy fuel welding – Filler and Flux materials–Arc welding, Electrodes, Coating and specifications – Gas T ungsten arc welding -Gas metal arc welding – Submerged arc welding – Electro slag welding- Plasma arc welding — Resistance welding Processes -Electron beam welding -Laser beam Welding Friction welding – Friction stir welding – Diffusion welding – Thermit Welding, Weld defects – inspection &remedies – Brazing – soldering – Adhesive bonding.

SHEET METAL PROCESSES
Sheet metal characteristics – Typical shearing, bending and drawing operations – Stretch forming operations – Formability of sheet metal – Test methods -special forming processes – Working principle and applications – Hydro forming – Rubber pad forming – Metal spinning – Introduction of Explosive forming, magnetic pulse forming, peen forming, Super plastic forming – Micro forming – Incremental forming.

Unit V

MANUFACTURE OF PLASTIC COMPONENTS
Types and characteristics of plastics – Molding of thermoplastics & Thermosetting polymers- working principles and typical applications – injection molding – Plunger and screw machines – Compression molding, Transfer Molding – Typical industrial applications – introduction to blow molding – Rotational molding – Film blowing – Extrusion – Thermoforming – Bonding of Thermoplastics- duff moulding.

Course Outcomes:

At the end of the course the students would be able to

  1. Explain the principle of different metal casting processes.
  2. Describe the various metal joining processes.
  3. Illustrate the different bulk deformation processes.
  4. Apply the various sheet metal forming process.
  5. Apply suitable molding technique for manufacturing of plastics components.
