Terminologies of thermodynamics, the variables and quantities of thermodynamics, characteristics of systems and processes, energy classifications, point and path functions, energy in transition work and heat. Zeroth law; temperature scales

Unit II

Unit III

Joules experiment, energy balance for closed systems, mass and energy balance for open systems, Statements of the second law of thermodynamics, heat engine and refrigerator, Carnot cycle and Carnot theorems, thermodynamic temperature scale, entropy and its calculation, second law of thermodynamics for a control volume, Third law of thermodynamics, entropy from a microscopic point of view.
