CE3413: Soil Mechanics Laboratory syllabus for Civil 2021 regulation

Soil Mechanics Laboratory

Course Objectives:

  • To develop skills to test the soils for their index and engineering properties and to characterize the soil based on their properties.

Exercises:

  1. DETERMINATION OF INDEX PROPERTIESSpecific gravity of soil solids
    1. Grain size distribution – Sieve analysis
    2. Grain size distribution – Hydrometer analysis
    3. Liquid limit and Plastic limit tests
    4. Shrinkage limit and Differential free swell tests
  2. DETERMINATION OF INSITU DENSITY AND COMPACTION CHARACTERISTICS
    1. Field density Test ( Sand replacement method)
    2. Determination of moisture – density relationship using standard proctor compaction test.
  3. DETERMINATION OF ENGINEERING PROPERTIES
    1. Permeability determination (constant head and falling head methods)
    2. One dimensional consolidation test (Determination of co-efficient of consolidation only)
    3. Direct shear test in cohesion less soil
    4. Unconfined compression test in cohesive soil
    5. Laboratory vane shear test in cohesive soil
    6. Tri-axial compression test in cohesion less soil (Demonstration only)
    7. California Bearing Ratio Test
  4. TEST ON GEOSYNTHETICS (Demonstration only)Determination of tensile strength and interfacial friction angle.
    1. Determination of apparent opening sizes and permeability.

Course Outcomes:

On completion of the course, the student is expected to

  1. Conduct tests to determine the index properties of soils
  2. Determine the insitu density and compaction characteristics.
  3. Conduct tests to determine the compressibility, permeability and shear strength of soils.
  4. Understand the various tests on Geosynthetics.
