CE3412: Materials Testing Laboratory syllabus for Civil 2021 regulation

Materials Testing Laboratory

Course Objectives:

To develop skills to test various construction materials.

Exercises:

I. TESTS ON METALS

  1. Tension test on steel rod
  2. Torsion test on mild steel rod
  3. Deflection test on metal beam
  4. Double shear test on metal
  5. Impact test on metal specimen (Izod and Charpy)
  6. Hardness test on metals (Rockwell and Brinell Hardness Tests)
  7. Compression test on helical spring
  8. Deflection test on carriage spring

II. TESTS ON CEMENT

  1. Determination of fineness of cement
  2. Determination of consistency of cement
  3. Determination of specific gravity of cement
  4. Determination of initial and final setting time of cement

III. TESTS ON FINE AGGREGATE

  1. Determination of specific gravity and water absorption of fine aggregate
  2. Determination of grading of fine aggregate
  3. Determination of water absorption for fine aggregate

IV. TESTS ON COARSE AGGREGATE

  1. Determination of compacted and loose bulk density of coarse aggregate
  2. Determination of impact value of coarse aggregate
  3. Determination of elongation index of coarse aggregate
  4. Determination of flakiness index of coarse aggregate
  5. Determination of aggregate crushing value of coarse aggregate
  6. Determination of specific gravity and water absorption of coarse aggregate

V. TESTS ON BRICKS

  1. Determination of compressive strength of bricks
  2. Determination of water absorption of bricks
  3. Determination of efflorescence of bricks

VI. TESTS ON CONCRETE

  1. Determination of slump of concrete
  2. Determination of compressive strength of concrete
  3. Determination of flowability of self-compacting concrete (Demo only)

VII. TEST ON WOOD

  1. Determination of Compression test on wood

Course Outcomes:

On completion of the course, the student is expected to

  1. Determine the mechanical properties of steel.
  2. Determine the physical properties of cement
  3. Determine the physical properties of fine and coarse aggregate.
  4. Determine the workability and compressive strength of concrete.
  5. Determine the strength of brick and wood.
