Unit I

INTRODUCTION TO KNITTING 9
Reasons for the growth of the knitting industry. Comparison of fabric properties – wovens, knits and bonded fabrics; classification of knitting processes – weft knit & warp knit; yarn quality requirements for knitting. Preparation of staple yarns for weft and warp knitting.

Unit II

FUNDAMENTALS OF KNITTING 9
General definitions and principles of knitting; Types of knitting needles – Bearded, Latch & Compound Needle. Elements of knitted loop structure.

Unit IV

WARP KNITTING 9
Basic principles; elements of warp knitted loop – open loop, closed loop; warp knitting
Elements chain link, chain links for simple patterns, guide bar movement mechanism, Tricot and Rachel warp knitting machines. Uses of warp knitted fabrics in technical applications.

Unit V

WET PROCESSING OF KNITS 9
Pre treatment – Scouring, bleaching and mercerization of knitted fabric, bio-scouring. Dyeing -dyeing of knit fabric with various classes of dyes. Printing and Finishing of knit fabric. Machines for processing of knit fabrics.

Upon completion of this course, the students shall have the knowledge on the

  2. Principle of knitting in different types of knitting machines
  3. Basic weft knitted structures, flat knitting process
  4. Functioning of warp knitting machines
