Unit I

NATURAL FIBRES Introduction: Definition of staple fibre, filament; Classification of natural and man-made fibres, essential and desirable properties of fibres. Production and cultivation of Natural Fibers: Cultivation of cotton, production of silk (sericulture), wool and jute – physical and chemical structure of these fibres..

Unit II

REGENERATED AND SYNTHETIC FIBRES Production sequence of regenerated and modified cellulosic fibres: viscose rayon, Acetate Rayon, high wet modulus and high tenacity fibres; synthetic fibres – chemical structure, fibre forming polymers, production principles.

Unit IV

BASICS OF WEAVING Woven fabric – warp, weft, weaving, path of warp; looms – classification, handloom and its parts, powerloom, automatic looms, shuttleless looms, special type of looms; preparatory machines for weaving process and their objectives; basic weaving mechanism – primary, secondary and auxiliary mechanisms

Unit V

BASICS OF KNITTING AND NONWOVEN Knitting – classification, principle, types of fabrics; nonwoven process -classification, principle, types of fabrics.

Course Outcomes:

On completion of this course, the students shall have the basic knowledge on

  1. Classification of fibres and production of natural fibres
  2. Regenerated and synthetic fibres
  3. Yarn spinning
  4. Weaving
  5. Knitting and nonwoven
