Unit I

INTRODUCTION Scope of industrial engineering in apparel Industry, role of industrial engineers.
Productivity: Definition – Productivity, Productivity measures .Reduction of work content due to the product and process, Reduction of ineffective time due to the management, due to the worker. Causes for low productivity in apparel industry and measures for improvement.

Unit II

WORK STUDY Definition, Purpose, Basic procedure and techniques of work-study.
Work environment – Lighting, Ventilation, Climatic condition on productivity.
Temperature control, humidity control, noise control measures. Safety and ergonomics on work station and work environment
Material Handling – Objectives, Classification and characteristics of material handling equipments, Specialized material handling equipments.

Unit IV

WORK MEASUREMENT Definition, purpose, procedure, equipments, techniques. Time study – Definition, basics of time study- equipments. Time study forms, Stop watch procedure. Predetermined motion time standards (PMTS). Time Study rating, calculation of standard time, Performance rating -relaxation and other allowances. Calculation of SAM for different garments, GSD.

Unit V

WORK STUDY APPLICATION Application of work study techniques in cutting, stitching and packing in garment industry. Workaids in sewing, Pitch diagram, Line balancing, Capacity planning, scientific method of training.

Course Outcomes:

Upon the completion of the course the student shall be able to understand

  1. Fundamental concepts of industrial Engineering and productivity
  2. Method study
  3. Motion analysis
  4. Work measurement and SAM
  5. Ergonomics and its application to garment industry
