INTRODUCTION TO PLASTIC MATERIALS Introduction to Plastics – Brief history of plastics, advantages and disadvantages, thermoplastic and thermosetting behavior, amorphous polymers, crystalline polymers and cross-linked structures. General purpose thermoplastics/ Commodity plastics: manufacture, structure, properties and applications of polyethylene (PE), cross-linked PE, chlorinated PE, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride-compounding, formulation, polypropylene (PP)
Unit II
ENGINEERING THERMOPLASTICS AND APPLICATIONS Engineering thermoplastics – Aliphatic polyamides: structure, properties, manufacture and applications of Nylon 6, Nylon 66. Polyesters: manufacture, structure, properties and uses of PET, PBT. Manufacture, structure, properties and uses of Polycarbonates, acetal resins, polyimides, PMMA, polyphenylene oxide, thermoplastic polyurethane (PU)

MISCELLANEOUS PLASTICS FOR END APPLICATIONS Miscellaneous plastics- Manufacture, properties and uses of polystyrene, HIPS, ABS, SAN, poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE), TFE and copolymers, PVDF, PVA, poly (vinyl acetate), poly (vinyl carbazole), cellulose acetate, PEEK, High energy absorbing polymers, super absorbent polymers- their synthesis, properties and applications

PLASTICS MATERIALS FOR BIOMEDICAL APPLICATIONS Sources, raw materials, methods of manufacturing, properties and applications of bio-based polymers- poly lactic acid (PLA), poly hydroxy alkanoates (PHA), PBAT, bioplastics- bio-PE, bioPP, bio-PET, polymers for biomedical applications
Course Outcomes:
- To study the importance, advantages and classification of plastic materials
- Summarize the raw materials, sources, production, properties and applications of various engineering thermoplastics
- To understand the application of polyamides, polyesters and other engineering thermoplastics, thermosetting resins
- Know the manufacture, properties and uses of thermosetting resins based on polyester, epoxy, silicone and PU
- To understand the engineering applications of various polymers in miscellaneous areas and applications of different biopolymers
