Unit I

ORIGIN, FORMATION AND REFINING OF CRUDE OIL Origin, Formation and Evaluation of Crude Oil. Testing of Petroleum Products. Refining of Petroleum – Atmospheric and Vacuum Distillation.

Unit II

CRACKING Cracking, Thermal Cracking, Vis-breaking, Catalytic Cracking (FCC), Hydro Cracking, Coking and Air Blowing of Bitumen

Unit IV

INTRODUCTION TO PETROCHEMICALS Petrochemicals – Cracking of Naphtha and Feed stock gas for the production of Ethylene, Propylene, Isobutylene and Butadiene. Production of Acetylene from Methane, and Extraction of Aromatics.

Unit V

PRODUCTION OF PETROCHEMICALS Production of Petrochemicals like Dimethyl Terephathalate(DMT), Ethylene Glycol, Synthetic glycerine, Linear Alkyl Benzene (LAB), Acrylonitrile, Methyl Methacrylate (MMA), Vinyl Acetate Monomer, Phthalic Anhydride, Maleic Anhydride, Phenol, Acetone, Methanol, Formaldehyde, Acetaldehyde, Pentaerythritol and production of Carbon Black.

Course Outcomes:

On the completion of the course students are expected to

  1. Understand the classification, composition and testing methods of crude petroleum and its products. Learn the mechanism of refining process.
  2. Understand the insights of primary treatment processes to produce the precursors.
  3. Study the secondary treatment processes cracking, vis-breaking and coking to produce more petroleum products.
  4. Appreciate the need of treatment techniques for the removal of sulphur and other impurities from petroleum products.
  5. Understand the societal impact of petrochemicals and learn their manufacturing processes.
  6. Learn the importance of optimization of process parameters for the high yield of petroleum products.
