OMR351: Mechatronics syllabus for EIE 2021 regulation (Open Elective-III)

Unit I

INTRODUCTION AND SENSORS Introduction to Mechatronics – Systems – Need for Mechatronics – Emerging areas of Mechatronics – Classification of Mechatronics. Sensors and Transducers: Static and Dynamic Characteristics of Sensor, Potentiometers – LVDT – Capacitance Sensors – Strain Gauges – Eddy Current Sensor – Hall Effect Sensor -Temperature Sensors – Light Sensors.

Unit II

8085 MICROPROCESSOR Introduction – Pin Configuration – Architecture of 8085 – Addressing Modes – Instruction set, Timing diagram of 8085.

Unit IV

PROGRAMMABLE LOGIC CONTROLLER Introduction – Architecture – Input / Output Processing – Programming with Timers, Counters and Internal relays – Data Handling – Selection of PLC.

Unit V

ACTUATORS AND MECHATRONICS SYSTEM DESIGN Types of Stepper and Servo motors – Construction – Working Principle – Characteristics, Stages of Mechatronics Design Process – Comparison of Traditional and Mechatronics Design Concepts with Examples – Case studies of Mechatronics Systems – Pick and Place Robot – Engine Management system – Automatic Car Park Barrier.

Course Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Select sensors to develop mechatronics systems.
  2. Explain the architecture and timing diagram of microprocessor, and also interpret and develop programs.
  3. Design appropriate interfacing circuits to connect I/O devices with microprocessor.
  4. Apply PLC as a controller in mechatronics system.
  5. Design and develop the apt mechatronics system for an application.
