Course Objective:
- To make the student familiarize with various mechanical testing.
- To offer hands-on training in the evaluation of mechanical properties and the standards.
- To know the importance of testing standards.
- To demonstrate the importance of stress-strain curves and resistance to indentation in . materials selection.
- To expose the different methods of evaluating the soundness of weldment.
List of Experiments:
- To perform tensile test and draw stress-strain plot, determination of yield/proof stress, Ultimate tensile strength, breaking stress and % elongation.
- Comparison of the stress-strain curves of aluminium alloys, steels, polymers and composites.
- To perform hardness test and determine hardness value using Rockwell Hardness/ Brinnel Tester.
- To determine hardness distribution using Micro vicker”s hardness.
- Determination of hardness by LEEB”s Hardness tester.
- Determination of fracture toughness by charpy impact test.
- To perform compression test and compare the compressive behaviour of steels/ aluminium alloys.
- To perform the torsion test.
- To perform Longitudinal and transverse welds test.
- To perform guide and root bend tests in welded specimen.
- To To perform Scratch hardness tests are to determine the hardness of a material to scratches and abrasion in Mohrs scale.
Course Outcome:
At the end of the course, the students will be able to:
- Select a suitable mechanical test method to evaluate the properties of material.
- Identify appropriate test method while performing failure analysis.
- Use the stress-strain plot in materials selection.
- Evaluate the soundness of the weldments.
- Discriminate hardness and hardenability.
