Unit I

Structure of Solids and Solidification of Pure Metals
Atomic Bonding and Crystal Structure: Metallic bond, unit cell, atomic packing, interstitial sites, Miller indices, crystal orientation, stereographic projection. Phase rule, Concept of Free Energy, Entropy, Surface Energy (grain boundary) and under cooling, Nucleation and Growth, homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation, directional solidification. Mechanisms (slip and twin), critical resolved shear stress, single crystal tensile test (FCC), theoretical strength of ideal crystal.

Unit III

Solidification of Binary Alloys
Limits of solubility, isomorphous system, lever rule, constitutional super cooling, effect of nonequilibrium cooling, eutectic, peritectic, eutectoid and peritectoid system, complex phase diagram, ternary diagram, structure of cast metal, segregation and porosity, iron-carbon diagram, steel and cast iron. Phase Diagrams of common commercial alloys: Cu-Ni, Ni-Cr, Al-Si, Al-Zn, Cu-Zn, Cu-Al, Ti-Al, Ti-V, interpretation of microstructure and properties.

Applications of Physical Metallurgy
Strengthening mechanism, strength vs. toughness (ductility), thermo mechanical processing, micro alloyed steel, ultra high strength steel, superalloy, control of texture.
