Unit I
BASICS OF SEMICONDUCTORS 9
Energy bands and Charge carriers in Semiconductors: Direct and Indirect semiconductors, Density of states, Occupation probability, Fermi level and quasi Fermi levels, p-n junctions, Schottky junction and Ohmic contacts.
Unit II
FUNDAMENTS OF OPTOELECTRONICS 9
Elements Of Light – Wave nature of light, Polarization, Interference, Diffraction, Light Source. Excess carriers in Semiconductors: optical absorption; photo, electro and cathode – luminescence. Relevence of III-V and IV-VI material-system in optoelectronic devices. Lasers – Laser Emission, Absorption, Radiation, Population Inversion, Optical Feedback, Threshold condition, Laser Modes, Classes of Lasers.

Unit IV
ADVANCED PROCESSING TECHNIQUES 9
Optoelectronic materials fabrication – Mechanical Milling, Colloidal routes, Self-assembly, CVD, MOCVD, Sputtering, Molecular Beam Epitaxy, Atomic Layer Epitaxy, MOMBE and Lithography. Processing Environment – clean room technology: specifications and design, air and water purity, requirements for particular processes.
Unit V
MODERN OPTOELECTRONIC DEVICES 9
Optoelectronic Integrated Circuits: Introduction, hybrid and Monolithic Integration, Application of Opto Electronic Integrated Circuits, Integrated transmitters and Receivers, Guided wave devices. Quantum dot, quantum well lasers, LED, Photovoltaic, Photo-transisters, opto-electronic switches.
Course Outcomes:
Upon Completion of the Course, the students will be able to
- Relate the impacts of semiconductor material properties and the optical properties of semiconductor devices.
- Discuss the fundamental properties of optoelectronic devices
- Explain the quantum effect and the length scales of materials
- Describe the various advanced processing techniques adopted for fabrication of optoelectronic materials.
- Identify suitable material for any given application.
