Unit I

INTRODUCTION TO MICROSYSTEMS Design, and material selection, micro-actuators: hydraulic, pneumatic, electrostatic/ magnetic etc. for medical to general purpose applications. Micro-sensors based on Thermal, mechanical, electrical properties; micro-sensors for measurement of pressure, flow, temperature, inertia, force, acceleration, torque, vibration, and monitoring of manufacturing systems.

Unit II

FABRICATION PROCESSES FOR MICRO-SYSTEMS: Additive, subtractive, forming process, microsystems-Micro-pumps, micro- turbines, micro engines, micro-robot, and miniature biomedical devices

Unit IV

PRECISION MACHINING PROCESSES Precision machining processes for macro components – Diamond turning, fixed and free abrasive processes, finishing processes.

Unit V

METROLOGY FOR MICRO SYSTEMS Metrology for micro systems – Surface integrity and its characterization.

Course Outcomes:

Upon the completion of this course the students will be able to

  1. Select suitable precision machine tools and operate
  2. Apply the macro and micro components for fabrication of micro systems.
  3. Apply suitable machining process
  4. Able to work with miniature models of existing machine tools/robots and other instruments.
  5. Apply metrology for micro system
