Course Objective:

• To provide practical knowledge on microscopical and microbiological testing of leathers and physical testing of leathers.

Microscopy Lab

1. Setting up of a compound microscope
2. Preparation of microscopical slides by paraffin embedding method and by freezing method
3. Identification of hides and skins from their morphological and histological pattern of Buffalo, Cow, Sheep, Goat, Pig and other species.
4. Microscopical assessment of fibre structure during the process – Soaking, liming, pickling and tanning and different finished leathers.

Microbiology Lab

1. Preparation of various culture media
2. Staining of bacteria
3. Enumeration of bacteria in hides and skins and in tan liquors
4. Isolation and identification of fungi/mold/yeast in raw hides/skins, leathers and tan liquors
5. Mildew resistance test for leathers
6. Identification of insect and parasitic damages in skins/hides/leathers (Entomology demo only)

Physical Testing Lab

Strength Properties

1. Tensile Strength and Elongation at break
2. Tongue tear strength
3. Stitch tear and slit tear strengths

Fastness Properties

1. Rub fastness
2. Light fastness

Course Outcome:

At the end of the course, the students would have practical experience and understanding in

1. Microscopical analysis/identification of leathers.
2. Microbiological testing of raw skins/hides, pelts and leathers and various process liquors.
3. Performing various physical testing methods for assessing leathers.
