Unit I

Fluid Properties and Fluid Mechanics
Fluid definition- compressible, in compressible fluids – Density, specific gravity, specific weight, surface tension, vapour pressure and viscosity. Newtonian and Non-newtonian fluids. Fluid statics – Barometric equation – application for incompressible and compressible fluids. Pressure changes in atmospheric air – Gauge and absolute pressure – pressure measurement with Bourdon gauge and manometers. Fluid Dynamics – equation of continuity – Bernoulli”s equation – pressure loss in straight pipes – in fittings – expansion and contraction losses (applied to Newtonian Fluids only) Fluid flow measurement, Orifice, venture and Rotameter for Newtonian fluids.

Unit III

Conduction Heat Transfer
Heat transfer phenomena – Heat conduction – Fourier”s equation -steady state conduction in radial systems – Resistance concept – series and resistance in conduction – parallel resistance in conduction – unsteady state conduction – extended surfaces (Fins) -combined conduction and convection – 2 dimensional conduction.

Radiation Heat Transfer and Heat Transfer Equipments
