EL3312: Fluid and Solid Operations Laboratory syllabus for CEE 2021 regulation

Fluid and Solid Operations Laboratory

Course Objectives:

To enable the students to

  • Develop a sound working knowledge on different types of crushing equipments and separation characteristics of different mechanical operation separators.
  • learn experimentally to calibrate flow meters, find pressure loss for fluid flows and determine pump characteristics.

List of Experiments:

  1. Sieve analysis
  2. Batch filtration studies using a Leaf filter
  3. Characteristics of batch Sedimentation
  4. Reduction ratio in Jaw Crusher / Pulverizer/ Hammer Mill
  5. Reduction ratio in Ball mill
  6. Reduction ratio of Roll Crusher
  7. Size separation using Sub-Sieving
  8. Viscosity measurement of non Newtonian fluids
  9. Flow through annular pipe
  10. Flow through helical coil and spiral coil
  11. Pressure drop studies in packed column
  12. Hydrodynamics of fluidized bed Minimum 10 experiments shall be offered

Course Outcomes:

Upon completion of the course, the students would have the

  • Practical knowledge and hands on experience on various separation techniques like filtration, sedimentation, screening, elutriation, and centrifugation
  • Ability to use variable area flow meters and variable head flow meters
  • Knowledge to analyze the flow of fluids through closed conduits, open channels and flow past immersed bodies
  • Knowledge to select pumps for the transportation of fluids based on process conditions/requirements and fluid properties
