Introduction
Safety Instrumented System (SIS): need, features, components, difference between basic process control system and SIS – Risk: how to measure risk, risk tolerance, Safety integrity level, safety instrumented functions – Standards and Regulation – HSE-PES, AICHE-CCPS, IEC-61508, ANSI/ISA-84.00.01-2004 (IEC 61511 Mod) and ANSI/ISA – 84.01-1996, NFPA 85, API RP 556, API RP 14C, OSHA (29 CFR 1910.119 – Process Safety Management of Highly Hazardous Chemicals – SIS design cycle – Process Control vs Safety Control.

Safety Integrity Level (Sil)

SIS Design check list – Case Description: Furnace/Fired Heater Safety Shutdown System: Scope of Analysis, Define Target SILs, Develop Safety Requirement Specification (SRS), SIS Conceptual Design, Lifecycle Cost Analysis, Verify that the Conceptual Design Meets the SIL, Detailed Design, Installation, Commissioning and Pre-startup Tests, Operation and Maintenance Procedures.
