Organic Chemistry Laboratory

Course Objective:

The course is aimed to ” Learn basic principles involved in analysis and synthesis of different organic derivatives.

List of Experiments:

  1. Identification and characterization of various functional groups by their characteristic reactions:
    1. alcohol,
    2. aldehyde,
    3. ketone,
    4. carboxylic acid,
    5. phenol
    6. primary, secondary and tertiary amines
  2. preparation of solid derivatives :
    1. 2,4 tri nitro phenyl hydrazone for aldehydes and ketones,
    2. Osazone for sugras,
    3. acetyl and benzoyl derivatives for amine and phenol
    4. diazotization of aromatic amine
  3. Preparation of Methyl red and Fluorescein
  4. Separation of organic mixtures:
    1. aldehyde and acid,
    2. amine and phenol
  5. Recrytallization of benzoic acid and acetanilide
  6. Preparation of simple pharmaceuticals
    1. acetanilide,
    2. methyl salicylate,
    3. aspirin
  7. Detection of peroxide in ether and its removal

Equipments Required

  1. Simple distillation setup
  2. Electric water bath Filtration pump*Minimum 10 experiments shall be offered

Course Outcome:

On the completion of the course students are expected to

  1. Conduct simple experiments to identify the functional group
  2. Prepare derivatives for aldehydes, ketones, sugars, amine and phenol
  3. Analyze various procedure to separate organic mixtures
  4. Steps to carry out recrystallization
  5. Prepare of simple pharmaceutical products
  6. Detect of peroxide in organic compound and its removal
