Course Objective:

  • To provide an overview of how computers are being used in mechanical component design

Unit I

Unit II

Geometric Modeling and Visual Realism
Representation of curves- Hermite curve- Bezier curve- B-spline curves-rational curves-Techniques for surface modeling – surface patch- Coons and bicubic patches- Bezier and B-spline surfaces. Solid modeling techniques- CSG and B-rep – Line-Surface-Solid removal algorithms -shading – colouring – computer animation.

Unit III

Assembly of Parts and Cad Standards
Assembly modelling – interferences of positions and orientation – tolerance analysis-mass property calculations – mechanism simulation and interference checking.
Standards for computer graphics- Graphical Kernel System (GKS) – standards for exchange images- Open Graphics Library (OpenGL) – Data exchange standards – IGES, STEP, CALS etc. -communication standards.

Production Planning and Control and Computerised Process Planning
Process planning – Computer Aided Process Planning (CAPP) – Logical steps in Computer Aided Process Planning – Aggregate Production Planning and the Master Production Schedule -Material Requirement planning – Capacity Planning- Control Systems-Shop Floor ControlInventory Control – Brief on Manufacturing Resource Planning-II (MRP-II) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP).
