Course Objective:
The course is aimed to
- To demonstrate various methods involved in the preparation of structural maps and interpretation
- To calculate the thickness of the beds,
- To study depositional environment using grain size analysis
- To find out sediment types using Sand – Silt – Clay ratio.
- To learn about surveying techniques
List of Experiments:
- Calculation of true and apparent dip.
- Estimation of thickness, distance and depth of over body.
- Estimation of throw and nature of fault.
- Interpretation of surface geology using contours.
- Grain size analysis.
- Identification of sedimentary rocks in hand specimen.
- Identification of sedimentary rocks in microscopic level.
- Resistivity Survey

- Petrological Microscope
- Pipette, Burette, Conical Flask
- Hot oven
- Measuring Tape
- Brunton Compass
- Resistivity measuring set.
- Gravity Meter, Simple Pendulum.
- Magnetometer.
- Radioactivity meter – Geiger muller counter, Scintillation Counter
- Torson Gravimeter.
Course Outcome:
On completion of the course students are expected to
- Determine the true and apparent dip.
- Able to handle petrological microscope and identify the samples.
- Use resistivity tools and determine the water saturation.
- Create grain size distribution.
- Understand subsurface structures using contours.
