BASICS OF SATELLITE ARCHITECTURE
A brief description of satellite architecture layout – Importance of design of satellite architecture in space missions-Satellite Payload and Bus – Different types of payload and their missions -Subsystems of Satellite Bus – A brief description and functions of subsystems of satellite bus -Satellite Structure – Power System – Attitude and orbit control – Telemetry and command -Satellite thermal control system – Data handling system – Satellite propulsion system

Unit II

SATELLITE POWER AND THERMAL CONTROL SYSTEMS
Satellite power system elements – solar arrays -fuel cells – radioisotope generators and batteries – Spacecraft thermal balance – view factors – equilibrium temperature – skin temperature -Passive and active thermal control systems

Unit IV

SATELLITE TELEMETRY AND COMMAND SYSTEM AND
DATA HANDLING
Basics of transponder system and antenna subsystem – filters and transmitters – telemetry data classification – telemetry data encoding – telemetry list and data format – error control – downlink frequencies and modulation – Telecommand user interface

Unit V

SATELLITE PROPULSION SYSTEM
Use of liquid chemical rocket propulsion – propellant management – use of secondary propulsion systems such as cold gas systems – solid propellant apogee motors – propulsive roles for electric rockets – use of electric rocket propulsion systems – types of electric propulsion systems

Course Outcomes:

Upon completion of the course the students

  1. will be able to apply the basic knowledge gained, for the preliminary design of small satellite systems
  2. will be able to analyze satellite telemetry data at preliminary level and understand the operation of telecommand user interface
  3. will be able to analyze satellite stability problems as a project team member and suggest solutions
  4. will be able to evaluate the suitability of satellite systems designed for a particular mission
  5. will be able to create suitable new designs for a specific mission for satellite-bus subsystems
