Unit I

INTRODUCTION TO SUSTAINABILITY Ecosystems, food chain and natural cycles on earth. Need for sustainable design in the context of anthropogenic activities. Climate change, ecological footprint, carbon footprint, loss of biodiversity, urban heat islands, energy crisis. Overview of sustainable development. Life cycle analysis. Cradle to cradle concept.

Unit III

SUSTAINABILITY IN BUILDING DESIGN Sustainable site selection and development. Simple passive design considerations involving site conditions, building orientation, plan form and building envelope for sun and wind. Passive heating of buildings- direct, indirect and isolated gain. Passive cooling of buildings – shading of buildings, insulation, induced ventilation (air vents, wind tower, etc.,), radiative cooling, evaporative cooling, earth coupling, dessicant cooling.

Unit V
