Rationale:

In this subject the basic concepts of mass transfer are covered to enable the students to understand working of various mass transfer equipment’s like crystallizers and driers which are used in industries for purification of products. This course explains the fundamentals of mass transfer and techniques involved in mass transfer operations of humidification, drying and absorption. This subject intends to equip the students with the concept and principles of mass transfer operation, which are of prime importance in any chemical industry. Mass transfer equipment’s are an integral part of any chemical plant. This subject will help the students to operate and design various mass transfer equipment’s.

Objectives:

On completion of the units of Syllabus, the students must be able to know about the following

    1. The principles of Humidification operations
    2. Various types of Cooling towers
    1. Drying characteristics solid material
    2. Diffusion mechanism and capillary mechanism in drying
    3. Different types of dryers used in industries.
    1. Principles of Crystallization
    2. Crystal growth and Crystal characteristics
    3. Type of crystallizers used in industries.
    1. The differences between Physical and Chemical adsorption
    2. Types of adsorbents and their applications
    3. Various absorption Equipments used in industries.
    1. The principles of Leaching and their significance
    2. Different methods of leaching used in industries
    3. Operation of various leaching equipments.

Unit II

Drying

Principles of Drying – Equilibrium and Hysteresis – Dry basis and wet basis moisture content – Equilibrium moisture – free moisture.-Bound and unbound moisture. Batch drying -mechanism of drying of solids: Constant rate drying ,Falling rate drying ,critical moisture content, Time of drying – Equation for time of drying-shrinkage and case hardening . Batch and continuous driers – Tray drier – Rotary drier – Spray drier – Fluidized bed drier – Freeze drier- Pneumatic conveyor drier – Description and operation of the above equipments.-simple problems .

Unit III

Crystallization

Principles of Crystallization – magma, crystal geometry, crystal growth, growth rate equation, growth coefficient, p L law of crystal growth, yield, purity, size range, crystal size Distribution(CSD), caking of crystals and its prevention- super saturation, generation of super saturation, units of super saturation- mechanism of Crystallization : Spurious nucleation, primary and secondary nucleation- contact nucleation- Fluid shear nucleation, Types of crystallizers- Forced circulation evaporative crystallizer, Draft Tube Baffle(DTB) evaporative crystallizer and Oslo surface cooled crystallizer.

Adsorption

Basic principles – Physical and chemisorption – Adsorbents classification: Macropore, Micropore and nesopore adsorbents.-Types of adsorbents – Amorphons, Crystalline and Desiccant -Physical properties of adsorbents such as shape, size range ,porosity, pore diameter,surface area ,bulk density, swelling, absorptive capacity, and strength – Important industrial adsorbents and their application – Regeneration of adsorbents.Fixed bed, moving bed and fluidized bed equipments – principle and operation.
