Module 1

Module 2

FORGING: Classification of forging processes. Forging machines and equipment. Expressions for forging pressures & load in open die forging and closed die forging by slab analysis, concepts of friction hill and factors affecting it, Die-design parameters. Material flow lines in forging. Forging defects, Residual stresses in forging. ROLLING: Classification of Rolling processes. Types of rolling mills, expression for Rolling load. Roll separating force. Frictional losses in bearing etc, power required rolling, Effects of front & back tensions, frictions, Roll diameter on rolling load, friction hill. Maximum possible reduction. Defects in rolled products. 8 Hours L1,L2,L3

Module 3

DRAWING & EXTRUSION: Drawing equipment & dies expression for drawing loads by slab analysis power requirement. Redundant work and its estimation, optimal cone angle & dead zone formation. Types of extrusion processes, extrusion equipment & dies, deformation, lubrication & defects in extrusion, extrusion of seamless pipes & tube. 8 Hours L1,L2,L3

POWDER METALLURGY & HIGH ENERGY RATE FORMING METHODS: Basic steps in powder metallurgy, Brief description of methods of production of metal powders, conditioning & blending of powders, compaction & sintering applications of powder metallurgy components. Principles, advantages & applications. Explosive forming, Electro hydraulic forming, electromagnetic forming. 8 Hours L1,L2

Course Outcomes:

After studying this course, students will be able to:

  1. CO1 Classify the different processes in metal forming.
  2. CO2 Describe the different types of metal forming process and its parameter.
  3. CO3 Adapt to make use of suitable stresses to cause plastic deformation in different metal forming processes like forging, rolling, drawing, extrusion, sheet metal, PM & HERF.
