Rationale:

Mechanical engineer is need of every industry and inmajority of cases he is made responsible for day to dayrepair and maintenance of parts and over all up keep of theplant for its smooth running. This paper aims to furnish themwith certain basic considerations related to their work andresponsibility. This subject aims at developing required knowledge and skills in this area.

Learning Outcomes:

After undergoing this course, the students will be able to:

  • Explain the concept of predictive maintenance,corrective maintenance and preventive maintenance
  • Explain the stages of maintenance.
  • Explain the sequence of maintenance.
  • Carry out routine servicing of Gears and transmission systems.
  • Carry out planning and scheduling of maintenance work.

1. Introduction (05 Periods)

2. Preventive maintenance (10 Periods)

Brief Introduction of General concept of predictive maintenance,corrective maintenance, preventive maintenance and their application and work approach – Condition checking , repair cycle, maintenance stages, classification of equipment’s for repair and their repair complexity (resources wanted in terms of size of maintenance department staff workers, materialsand spaces, annual repair cost of machines and percentage break downs and resulting efficiency etc.), annual and monthly maintenance schedules, man power planning , norms for machine stoppages during preventive maintenance, percentage of equipment to be taken for preventive maintenance of one go . Norms for Maintenance cost , economic effect ofpreventive maintenance.

3. Maintenance stages (05 Periods)

Details of work in each stage for different equipment’s Metalcutting and metal working machine wood working machines,material bundling and equipment’s, Foundry furnaces and various electrical equipment’s on machines. Pumps, air compressors and etc.

4. Sequence of maintenance operations (06 Periods)

5. Planning and scheduling of maintenance work (04 Periods)

Work authorisation and control, standard time formaintenance work, work measurement, worksimplification,concept of break down maintenance.

6. Gears and transmission (14 Periods)

Usual defects occurring in gears during use. Checking forcorrect meshing of gears, wear of teeth, breaking ortwisting of teeth. Burrs on internal splines of the gearbore or tooth surface. Crack or damage on the rim or bore ofthe gear wheel and methods for repair of the defects. Method of removal of gears.
Vee belt drive, Chains and sprocket wheels. Standardsections and length of Veebelts. Defect and repair methodsof pulley grooves. Installation and assembly of Vee belt,care and maintenance of belts. Looking after and settingsright timing belts used in high precision machines.
Different types of standard size chains. Chain wear andtheir repair methods. Design tolerances. Repair methods ofsprocket wheels. Assembly of chain drive.

7. Coupling, clutches and bearings (12 Periods)

List of Experiments:

  1. BEARINGS: Inspection, Removal, Cleaning, Lubrication andrefitting of bearings.
  2. Maintenance, repair and replacement of couplings and alignment of shaft.
  3. Belts and Chain drives:
    1. Mounting of belts and checking of slip.
    2. Tighten and replacement of chains.
  4. To do following exercise with the given small subassembly units:
    1. To select tools core removing sub assembly.
    2. To remove the sub assembly unit from the equipment/machine.
    3. To disassemble unit.
    4. To clean the parts prepare a list and draw sketches.
    5. To inspect and identify worn out parts.
    6. To suggest whether the part deserve replacement, readjustment or recovery. Method of recovery if wanted so.
    7. To reassemble sub assembly replacing worn out parts.
  5. Preparing decision tree for fault Location. Locating fault and rectifying that for equipment such as Bicycle, Hydraulic pump, water cooler, Refrigerator, A machine tool and An Air Compressor.
  6. Maintenance of the various system including Lubrications service for system such as I.C. Engine, Pump, centrifugal , Reciprocal, Air compressor Rotary and reciprocating, Refrigerator, Air conditioner, Any machine tools.
  7. Preparation of preventive maintenance schedule for institution machine shop.
  8. Maintenance of material handling equipment available in the institution.

  3. Plan assignments so as to promote problem solving abilities and develop continued learning skills
