The detailed syllabus for Phytochemistry Lab M.Pharm 2017-2018 (R17) first year first sem is as follows.

M.Pharm. I Year I Sem.

List of experiments

Preparation of extracts of organized crude drugs / Herbs by successive solvent extraction method to record the percentage yield and physical status of the respective extracts and for subjecting them to phytochemical screening.

  • Detection of Phytoconstituents by test tubes and TLC methods, such as
  • Alkaloids,
  1. Steroids, Triterpenoids and their glycosides and saponins,
  2. Anthracene glycosides
  3.  Flavanoids and their glycosides
  4. Coumarins
  5. Tannins
  • Identification of alkaloids in a mixture by TLC
    e.g. Atropine, Caffeine, Ergot, Piperine, Quinine, Reserpine, Strychnine and Brucine
  • Color reactions of different groups of alkaloids.
  • Isolation of the following Phytoconstituents
  1. Caffeine from Tea
  2. Caffeine from marketed product
  3. Quinine from Cinchona
  4. Strychnine and Brucine from Nux-Vomica by Column chromatography.
  5. Piperine from black pepper
  • Detection, extraction, and estimation of volatile oils by Clevenger’s method (Hydrodistillation method), TLC of volatile oils and their pure constituents.
