Clinical Toxicology Detailed Syllabus for Pharmacy Practice M.Pharm first year second sem is covered here. This gives the details about credits, number of hours and other details along with reference books for the course.

The detailed syllabus for  Clinical Toxicology M.Pharm 2017-2018 (R17) first year second sem is as follows.

M.Pharm. I Year II Sem.

Course Objective: In the current scenario of accidental, homicidal and suicidal excessive consumption of drugs, pesticides, heavy metals and other poisonings, this elective helps the students to acquire the required knowledge and skills in the management of poisoning.

Course Outcome: At the end of the course the student is equipped with handling the first aid, elimination enhancement and treatment of poisoning and supportive care in poisoning due to

  1. Pesticides
  2. Drug over usage
  3. Heavy metals
  4. Radiation
  5. Snakes and anthropod bites
  6. Food poisoning

The student also gains knowledge in substance abuse and treatment of drug dependence.

UNIT I : General principles involved in the management of poisoning, antidotes and the clinical applications.

UNIT II : Supportive care in clinical toxicology. Gut decontamination, elimination enhancement and toxicokinetics.

UNIT III : Clinical symptoms and management of acute poisoning with the following agents –

  1. Pesticide poisoning: organophosphorous compounds, carbamates, organochlorines, pyrethroids.
  2. Opiates overdose.
  3. Antidepressants
  4. Barbiturates and benzodiazepines.
  5. Alcohol: ethanol, methanol.
  6. Paracetamol and salicylates.
  7. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
  8. Hydrocarbons: Petroleum products and PEG.
  9. Caustics: inorganic acids and alkalis.
  10. Radiation poisoning

UNIT IV : Clinical symptoms and management of chronic poisoning with the following agents –

  1. Heavy metals: Arsenic, lead, mercury, iron, copper
  2. Venomous snake bites: Families of venomous snakes, clinical effects of venoms, general management as first aid, early manifestations, complications and snake bite injuries.
  3. Plants poisoning. Mushrooms, Mycotoxins.
  4. Food poisonings
  5. Envenomations – Arthropod bites and stings.

UNIT V : Substance abuse: Signs and symptoms of substance abuse and treatment of dependence

  1. CNS stimulants: amphetamine
  2. Opioids
  3. CNS depressants
  4. Hallucinogens: LSD
  5. Cannabis group
  6. Tobacco
