Course Objectives:

  1. To understand the concepts of indefinite integrals and definite integrals with applications to engineering problems.
  2. To understand the formation of differential equations and learn various methods of solving them.

Unit I

Indefinite Integration.
1. Integration regarded as anti-derivative – Indefinite integrals of standard functions. Properties of indefinite integrals. Integration by substitution or change of variable. Integrals of tan x, cot x, sec x, cosec x. Integrals of the form J sinm X.COSn xdx, where at least one of m and n is odd positive integers. Integrals of suitable powers of tanx. secx and cosecx.cotx by substitution.
Evaluation of integrals which are reducible to the following forms:

  1. 1 / (a^2 + x^2) ,1 / (a^2 – x^2), 1 / (x^2 – a^2)
  2. 1 / sqrt(a^2 + x^2), 1 / sqrt(a^2 – x^2), 1 / sqrt(x^2 – a^2)
  3. sqrt(x^2 – a^2), sqrt(x^2 + a^2), sqrt(a^2 – x^2)Integration by decomposition of the integrand into simple rational, algebraic functions. Integration by parts, Bernoullis rule and integrals of the form integral e^x[f(x) + f not(x)] dx.
