Factors affecting the rate of corrosion: ratio of\u00a0anodic to cathodic areas, nature of metal, nature of corrosion\u00a0product, nature of medium \u2013 pH, conductivity, and temperature.\u00a0Types of corrosion- Differential metal, differential aeration (Pitting\u00a0and water line) and stress. Corrosion control: Inorganic coatings Anodizing\u00a0of Al and phosphating; Metal coatings-Galvanization and\u00a0Tinning. Cathodic protection (sacrificial anodic and impressed\u00a0current methods).\u00a0Metal Finishing: Introduction, Technological importance.\u00a0Electroplating: Introduction, principles governing-Polarization,\u00a0decomposition potential and overvoltage. Factors influencing the\u00a0nature of electro deposit-current density, concentration of metal ion\u00a0&amp; electrolyte; pH, temperature &amp; throwing power of plating bath;\u00a0additives- brighteners, levellers, structure modifiers &amp; wetting\u00a0agents. Electroplating of Nickel (Watt\u2019s Bath) and\u00a0Chromium(decorative and hard). Glass transition\u00a0temperature (Tg): Factors influencing Tg-Flexibility, inter molecular\u00a0forces, molecular mass, branching &amp; cross linking and stereo\u00a0regularity. Significance of Tg. Structure property relationship:\u00a0crystallinity, tensile strength, elasticity &amp; chemical resistivity.\u00a0Synthesis, properties and applications of PMMA (plexi glass),\u00a0Polyurethane and polycarbonate. Elastomers: Introduction,\u00a0synthesis, properties and applications of Silicone rubber.\u00a0Adhesives: Introduction, synthesis, properties and applications of\u00a0epoxy resin. Polymer Composites: Introduction, synthesis,\u00a0properties and applications of Kevlar. Conducting polymers:\u00a0Introduction, mechanism of conduction in Poly aniline and\u00a0applications of conducting poly aniline.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Module-5 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0[Hours \u2013 10]<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> Water Technology and Nanomaterials:\u00a0<\/strong>Water Technology: Introduction, boiler troubles with\u00a0disadvantages &amp; prevention methods-scale and sludge formation,\u00a0priming and foaming, boiler corrosion(due to dissolved O2, CO2 and\u00a0MgCl2). Determination of DO, BOD and COD, numerical problems\u00a0on COD. Sewage treatment: Primary, secondary (activated sludge\u00a0method) and tertiary methods. Softening of water by ion exchange\u00a0process. Desalination of sea water by reverse osmosis &amp; electro\u00a0dialysis (ion selective)..\u00a0Nano Materials: Introduction, properties (size dependent).\u00a0Synthesis-bottom up approach (sol-gel, precipitation, gas\u00a0condensation &amp; chemical vapour condensation processes).
