Characteristics of system\u00a0boundary and control surface, examples. Thermodynamic properties &#8211; definition and units,\u00a0intensive and extensive properties. Thermodynamic state, state point, state diagram, path and\u00a0process, quasi-static process, cyclic and non-cyclic processes; Thermodynamic equilibrium;<br \/>\nZeroth law of thermodynamics, Temperature; concepts, scales, fixed points and measurements.\u00a0Work and Heat: Thermodynamic definition of work; examples, sign convention, p-v diagrams. [10 Hours]<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNIT \u2013 4<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> Entropy:<\/strong> Clasius inequality; Statement, proof, application to a reversible cycle. Entropy;\u00a0definition, a property, change of entropy, principle of increase in entropy, calculation of entropy\u00a0using Tds relations.<br \/>\n<strong>Pure Substances<\/strong>: P-T and P-V diagrams, triple point and critical points. Subcooled liquid,\u00a0saturated liquid, mixture of saturated liquid and vapour, saturated vapour and superheated vapour\u00a0states of pure substance with water as example. Enthalpy of change of phase (Latent heat).\u00a0Dryness fraction (quality), Steam tables and its use. Air cycle refrigeration; reversed Carnot cycle, reversed Brayton cycle, Vapour\u00a0absorption refrigeration system. Calculation of refrigeration load with examples.<br \/>\n<strong>Psychometry:<\/strong> Atmospheric air and psychometric properties; Dry bulb temperature, wet bulb\u00a0temperature, dew point temperature; partial pressures, specific and relative humidities.\u00a0Construction and use of psychometric chart .
