Course Objectives:

This course will enable students to

  1. Understand the basic principles of TQM.
  2. Comprehend the customer satisfaction and customer involvement.
  3. Acquire the knowledge of quality management tools and Statistical Process Control.

Module 2

Customer Satisfaction and Customer Involvement: Customer Satisfaction : customer and customer perception of quality, feedback, using customer complaints, service quality, translating needs into requirements, customer retention, Case studies. Employee Involvement – Motivation, employee surveys, empowerment, teams, suggestion system, recognition and reward, gain sharing, performance appraisal, unions and employee involvement, case studies.

Module 3

Continuous Process Improvement: Process, the Juran trilogy, improvement strategies, types of problems, the PDSA Cycle, problemsolving methods, Kaizen, reengineering, six sigma, case studies. Tools and Techniques: Benching marking, information technology, quality management systems, environmental management system, quality function deployment, quality by design, failure mode and effect analysis, product liability, total productive maintenance.

Module 5

Building and Sustaining Performance Excellence in Organizations: Making the commitment to total quality, organizational culture and total quality, change management, sustaining the quality organization, selfassessment processes, implementing ISO 9000, Bald ridge, and sis sigma, a view toward the future. Design for Six Sigma: Tools for concept development, tools for design development, tools for design optimization, tools for design verification, problems.

Course Outcomes:

After studying this course, students will be able to:

  1. Apply the basic principles of TQM.
  2. Classify customer satisfaction and customer involvement.
  3. Apply quality management tools and Statistical Process Control.

Question paper pattern:

  • The question paper will have ten questions.
  • Each full question consists of 16 marks.
  • There will be 2 full questions (with a maximum of four sub questions) from each module.
  • Each full question will have sub questions covering all the topics under a module.
  • The students will have to answer 5 full questions, selecting one full question from each module.
