Course Objectives:

The objectives of this course are to understand:

  • The fundamentals of digital image processing
  • Image transform used in digital image processing
  • Frequency domain and time domain image enhancement techniques
  • Image restoration techniques and methods used in digital image processing
  • Morphological Operations and Segmentation used in digital image processing

Module 1

Module 2

Image Enhancement in the Spatial Domain: Background, Some Basic Intensity Transformation Functions, Histogram Processing, Enhancement Using Arithmetic/Logic Operations, Fundamentals of Spatial Filtering, Smoothing and sharpening Spatial Filters. [Text 1: Chapter 3: Sections 3.1 to 3.6]

Module 3

Filtering, Image Restoration: Preliminary Concepts, The Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) of One Variable, Extension to Functions of Two Variables, Some Properties of the 2-D Discrete Fourier Transform, Frequency Domain Filtering, A Model of the Image degradation/Restoration process, Noise Models, Restoration in the Presence of Noise Only-Spatial Filtering, homomorphic filtering. [Text 1: Chapter 4: Sections 4.2, 4.4 to 4.7, 4.9.6 and Chapter 5: Sections 5.2, 5.3]

Image Segmentation and Representation: Thresholding, Region-Based Segmentation, Boundary Following, Chain Codes, Polygonal Approximations using Minimum-Perimeter Polygons, Other Polygonal Approximation Approaches, Signature, Boundary Segmentations.

Course Outcomes:

At the end of the course, students should be able to:

  • Understand image formation and the role human visual system plays in perception of gray and color image data.
  • Apply image processing techniques in both the spatial and frequency (Fourier) domains.
  • Design image analysis techniques in the form of image segmentation and to evaluate the Methodologies for segmentation.
  • Conduct independent study and analysis of Image Enhancement techniques.
