Course Objectives:

This course will enable students to

  1. Understand the importance of discretisation of domain using different finite elements
  2. Acquire the knowledge of different loading and boundary conditions
  3. Understand the governing methods of finite element analysis

Module 1

Module 2

Fundamentals of Finite Element Method: Construction of shape functions for bar element and beam element, Bar elements, uniform bar elements, uniform section, mechanical and thermal loading, varying section, truss analysis, Frame element, Beam element, problems for various loadings and boundary conditions.

Module 3

Analysis of Two and Three dimensional Elements: Shape functions of Triangular, Rectangular and Quadrilateral elements, different types of
higher order elements, constant and linear strain triangular elements, stiffness matrix Four-Noded Tetrahedral Element (TET 4), Eight-Noded Hexahedral Element (HEXA 8), Tetrahedral elements, Hexahedral elements: Serendipity family, Hexahedral elements: Lagrange family.

Module 5

Field Problems: Heat transfer problems, Steady state fin problems, 1D heat conduction governing equation, Derivation of element matrices for two dimensional problems, Dynamic consideration- Formulation-Hamilton’s principle, Element mass matrices.

Course Outcomes:

After studying this course, students will be able to:

  1. Apply discretisation technique for domain decomposition.
  2. Evaluate the effects of different loading and boundary conditions
  3. Analyze the governing equations of finite element analysis

Question paper pattern:

  • The question paper will have ten questions.
  • Each full question consists of 16 marks.
  • There will be 2 full questions (with a maximum of four sub questions) from each module.
  • Each full question will have sub questions covering all the topics under a module.
  • The students will have to answer 5 full questions, selecting one full question from each module.
