Course Objectives:
At the end of the course, students will be able to

- Describe application of photo elasticity.
- Explain different separation methods.
- Analyze coating stresses.
- Analyze brittle coating stresses and explain calibration of coating.

Photo-elasticity: Nature of light, Wave theory of light – optical interference ,Stress optic law -effect of stressed model in plane and circular polariscopes, Isoclinics&Isochromatics, Fringe order determination Fringe multiplication techniques, Calibration photo elastic model materials.
Module 3
Two Dimensional Photo-elasticity: Separation methods: Shear difference method, Analytical separation methods, Model to prototype scaling, Properties of 2D photo-elastic model materials Three Dimensional Photo elasticity: Stress freezing method, Scatteredlight photo-elasticity, Scattered light as an interior analyzer and polarizer, Scattered light polariscope.

Brittle Coatings:
Coatings stresses, Crack patterns, Refrigeration techniques, Load relaxation techniques, Crack detection methods, Types of brittle coatings, Calibration of coating. Advantages and brittle coating applications.
Moire Methods:
Moire fringes produced by mechanical interference. Geometrical approach, Displacement field approach to Moire fringe analysis, out of plane displacement measurements, Out of plane slope measurements, applications and advantages.
