Course Objectives:

This course will enable students to

  1. Understand the basics of measurements.
  2. Study about the electrical resistance strain gauges.
  3. Acquire the knowledge of NDT.

Module 1

Module 2

Extensometers: Mechanical, Optical, Acoustical and Electrical extensometers and their uses. Advantages and disadvantages.

Module 3

Electrical Resistance Strain Gauges: Principle of operation and requirements of electrical strain gauges. Types and their uses, Materials for strain gauge. Calibration and temperature compensation, cross sensitivity, Rosette analysis. Wheatstone bridge and potentiometer circuits for static and dynamic strain measurements, strain indicators.

Module 5

Nondestructive Testing: Fundamentals of NDT. Radiography, ultrasonic, magnetic particle inspection, Fluorescent penetrant technique, Eddy current testing, Acoustic Emission Technique, Fundamentals of brittle coating methods, Introduction to Moire techniques, Holography, ultrasonic C- Scan, Thermograph, Fiber-optic Sensors.

Course Outcomes:

After studying this course, students will be able to:

  1. Classify the types of extensometers.
  2. Use the electrical resistance strain gauges.
  3. Identify the different methods of NDT.

Question paper pattern:

  • The question paper will have ten questions.
  • Each full question consists of 16 marks.
  • There will be 2full questions (with a maximum of four sub questions) from each module.
  • Each full question will have sub questions covering all the topics under a module.
  • The students will have to answer 5 full questions, selecting one full question from each module.
