Module-1

PHYSICAL BASIS OF QUANTUM MECHANICS Experimental background, inadequacy of classical physics, summary of principal experiments and inferences, Uncertainty and Complementarity. Wave packets in space and time, and their physical significance. Schrodinger wave equation: Development of wave equation: One-dimensional and extension to three dimensions inclusive of forces. Ehrenfest’s theorem.

Module-2

THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF QUANTUM MECHANICS The fundamental postulates, expectation values and probabilities; quantum mechanical operators, explicit representation of operators, uncertainty principle. Matrix method solution of linear harmonic oscillator. Quantum dynamics: Equations of motion, Schrodinger, Heisenberg and Interaction pictures. Poisson brackets and commutator brackets.

Question Paper Pattern:

  • The question paper will have ten full questions carrying equal marks. Each full question consisting of 16 marks.
  • There will be two full questions (with a maximum of four sub questions) from each module.
  • Each full question will have sub question covering all the topics under a module.
