UNIT I: CONCEPTS OF ELECTRICAL ENERGY 10 Hrs

Introduction: Sources of electrical energy, advantages of electrical energy, effects of current and its applications.

Electric current, voltage and circuits: Electric current and its unit, instruments used for measurement of current, emf, potential difference and its unit, instrument used to measure voltage, open circuit, closed circuit and short circuit, concepts of conductor, insulator and semiconductor, resistance and its unit, meter used to measure resistance, ohms law and its application, simple problems.

Work, power and energy: Mechanical power, energy, work and their units, measurement of power and energy, conversion of mechanical units into electrical units and vice versa, electric power, energy, work and their units, simple problems.

UNITII: AC CIRCUITS AND ELECTRICAL MACHINES 08 Hrs

Alternating current and circuits: Concepts of alternating current, definition of terms- amplitude, instantaneous value, time period, cycle, frequency, r m s value, average value, form factor and their units, inductance, capacitance, reactance, impedance and their units, power and power factor, simple problems.

Electric machines: DC Generator-function, types, applications, AC generators- function, types, applications, AC motors-function, types, applications, difference between 1ph and 3ph motors, necessity of starters, mention the types of starters.

UNITIII: ELECTRIC CABLES AND PROTECTIVE DEVICES 06Hrs

UNIT IV: AUTOMATED SYSTEMS 08Hrs

Automated systems: Contactors, Definition of automated system, objectives of automation, organization and operation of automated system, activities of automation specialist.

Sensors: Definition of a sensor, digital sensors or detectors, analog sensors or transmitter sensors

Electronic control of induction motor: Solid state switches, rectifiers, inverters, phase angle modulators, electronic soft starter, speed controller, water industries applications.

UNIT V: BINARY LOGIC AND PLC 10Hrs

Binary logic elements: Example of system with binary logic, Logic gates-NOT, AND, OR, NAND, NOR, applications of ICs.

PLC: Introduction, types of PLC, working, wiring of PLC, controlling a motor using PLC.

Sequential function chart: Introduction, principles of SFC, Industrial example, different structures of SFC-alternative & parallel structure, counting, delaying, applications.

UNIT VI: FEEDBACK CONTROL LOOP 10Hrs

  2. A circuit consists of a resistance of 10ohm and an inductance of 0.2 Henry. Find inductive reactance and impedance of the circuit at 50Hz.
  3. What are the applications of ohms law. OR A lamp has a resistance of 400ohms. It is connected to a 230V supply. Determine the energy consumed, when used for 3hrs a day, during the month of Feb 1992.
