UNIT I: INTRODUCTION 10 Hrs
Necessity of water treatment units, Classification of treatment system, Typical flow sheet for rural & urban water treatment
Characteristics of raw water – Impurities of water – organic and inorganic
Physical characteristics – Turbidity, Colour, Taste& odour, temperature, specific conductivity,, chemical characteristics – Total Solids and Suspended Solids, pH, hardness, Chlorides, Nitrogen ontent, metals and other chemical substances and bacteriological characteristics – Bacteria and other micro-organisms, water borne diseases amd their control, Water quality standards for Domestic and Industrial Supplies.
UNITII: PRIMARY TREATMENT OF WATER 06 Hrs
Screens – Necessity, Types – Coarse and Fine Screens, Fixed Bar type screen, Moveable bar type screens, wastes from Screens and their disposal.
Plain Sedimentation – Purpose and Location, Theory of sedimentation, Stoke’s Law (only statement and its expression) Sedimentation tanks – Types of sedimentation tanks (Nature of working, Flow Type & shapes), cleaning and sludge removal from sedimentation tanks and their disposal methods, Design aspects of continuous flow type sedimentation tanks.

- Conduct a market survey and prepare a report on any 2 locally available (Natural) coagulants
- Construction and Pilot plant study on filter beds
- Submit a report on comparing the type of mechanism used in any two household water filtration systems in use
- Write a report on studying the case studies the various form in which chlorine is added in the Disinfection process.
- Submit a report on comparing the type of mechanism used in any two household water disinfection systems in use
