Course Objectives:
- To study feasibility of using cemented carbides in press tools.
- To study methods of manufacturing accurate sheet metal pressed component.
- To study advanced techniques applied in sheet metal forming.
- To study Construction and functioning of high speed presses.
- The students will be assessed for a good understanding of the fundamental principles of press tools and advanced pres operations, application of these principles to problem situations in industry. They will also be assessed with simple calculations only.

UNIT I: CEMENTED CARBIDE PRESS TOOL 12 Hrs
Powder metallurgy: Brief introduction, preparation of powder and carbide press tool dies and punches. Locating and housing of cemented carbide inserts in the and construction of pres tools. Method of preparation of die and punch. Tool alignment and assembling, setting and functioning of tool on the press machine. Application, advantages and limitations of the tool.
UNIT II: SHAVING OPERATION 6 Hrs
Introduction of shaving operation and tool, Study about Component nesting and llocating of component for, Secondary operation to achieve component accuracy, perpendicular sheared edges and finish on the sheared edges. Calculations of blank size, cutting clearance, shaving allowance.
Tool construction: Determining of punch and die size for blanking and piercing, study about Punch and die materials, hardness for elements of tool. Advantage and limitations.
